im the only one posting build progress pics on this thread, all i see are awesome lookin finished boards on here. well im not gonna start another self serving build thread tonight, so heres a couple more…
Hi cuttlefish. I moved my fins up to 6 inches off the tail because my previous attempt, with fins back, was too stiff. Move fins up, not too stiff. I could easily instal another set of boxes and put the fins forward. I would rather instal a set forward and try it as a quad. I probably won’t get to that until Spring when things start to slow down. Now is a good time for winter board fun around here. Mike
They are about 3 1/2" from the tail and 3/4" from the rail with 1/8" tow and 4 degrees cant.it really is a good feel but I feel the boards potential and a rail finned quad may be the answer.I’m going to quad it tomorrow and surf it on the next clean swell.
did a vert reo after getting around a section I nearly gave up on that blew me away, firstly nearly didnt go the wave coz bit behind the peak, 2nd,was a bit wedgy and hollow so thought the flat slab wouldnt like it, 3rd, like I said nearly gave up coz I was fair way behind, then got around it and did the quickest whippy reo and it was all over before I knew it...big smille, laugh to myself, back out and try to do it again....feeling more confident now and have yet to really ride it in the right conditions.....
No hard and fast rules re fin placement and we all seem to be riding quite varied interpretations of the board so it’s a case of experiment and figure what works best.
Looks like a lot of shapers are still working on a fish like fin placement.
Not shaping my own boards has me relying on the shaper having the variables already dialled in.
I was talking to Daniel McDonald yesterday and he’s got a bamboo/eps model with a more pulled in nose and some other tweaks in the works.
Hey Mark,
They sure are a suprise package.
I’ve been working on figuring out getting around sections better and simply needed to lower my centre of gravity more and get that parallel rail pushed in.
It’s pretty fun trying to stall for the tube by putting more weight on the back foot (out of habit) and simply speeding up
Maroochydore was lots of fun this morning, glassy, lined up 2-3’ with nice lefts and rights inbetween the obligatory close outs.
Woodsy from Beachbeat (Alex) was out on a GSI alaia going so fast it was ridiculous.
wonder if they have a demo loaner there for meeeee...... Woodsy has to be one of the best all rounders I know ( on diff craft )
i'll be at Marooch tomorrow, usually hit the stretch between the cvan park and surf club, pierce park....where's the banks ? might see you there but I dont know what you look like ....I'll look for the bar of soap.....
Here’s a progress report with pics!I set the front and back fins using the mckee fin placement, except I place my shapers dots 1 1/4" in from the rail with 1/8" tow, front and back.I’m running fcs sf4 with 6 degree inserts. There’s only slop in the surf forcast, but I’ll have some sort of ride report in the next few days.
Woodsy is riding the longer one (6’2" I think) and funniest thing was he spent an awful lot of time paddling back out because the board is narrow it’s not the easiest paddler.
Usually he’s paddling past me and snagging another one so the shoe was on the other foot. Ha!
He is good. I was amazed he was riding it in the waves he had yesterday.
Here’s the Beachbeat Alex No 5443 2777. The Alaia is no problem to borrow. I was going to grab it the other day. Went home, came back and somebody else had already snagged it.
It is living in the Beachbeat van Woodsy drives. Not sure if he’s working today.
There’s been a good couple of banks right in front of Seabreeze rather than Pierce park. The young frothing crew have been all over it so…
I’ve been surfing a bank Northof the second set of stairs up from Sharks on the lower tide.
The first set of stairs with the shower has now been dubbed “Geriatrics” but I’d never known of as that until I heard the Beachbeat crew calling it that.
High tide has been filling the banks up. Looks like may have to be around Sharks or the surfclub tomorrow with the winds.
See you tomorrow, call or spot me. I’ll be out there early though to get as much low tide time as I can.
wow, waves were extremely puss, the high tide didnt help but too much east in the wind, very uninviting indeed.....would've had a paddle but left the fish-finger at home so I could fit a few others in, bad decision.....maybe later.....
It was Sunday actually, had waves like this on Sat and Sunday, Sunday morning was bigger and beter , maybe shoulder high on sets and clean and shapely believe it or not....yep, catch up soon, planing a board testing day and Shearer might be filming it.....
Doesn’t look like those pics were taken on Sunday.
What an atrocious day. Came down about 9ish for a look to see if you were about with the Nth Shore gathering but a quick look and all I could see was a clubbie carnival.
We’ll catch up soon enough. Maybe I’ll meet Shearer one day too LOL.
Lance, love it. Love the ride report too. This is getting tempting. Cool fins. Not that I’m going to try and make any fins, but what did you use for ply, and do you have all your fingers left?
Had my first surf with my dim-SIM today in 1-2ft windslop. I can’t believe how much fun I had! It paddled so well it would get me out the back so quickly, I think I caught about 60 odd waves in the one session. It surfed 1ft waves just as well as the 2ft sets too, all it needed was a little bit of wall, it was hilarious!
Its quite a different feel to a rockered pull in tail. It goes so much faster, but turning is almost like I have to lean on the tail and “load” the fin, giving a bit of a slightly delayed response compared to a curvy shortboard with its sudden response. It likes more horizontal lines, but as I got used to it I was doing full roundhouse pinball cutbacks, some snaps and semi-floater reos. All on 1-2ft weak sloppy waves!! ha!
Can’t wait for some decent waves to really experience some speed on this thing…I get a feel it’ll be like flying. So far the ride feels a lot like the effortless glide and speed you get on a mal, but without the uneccessary few extra feet of board either end that either get in the way or cause drag when you turn.
