Basic Measurments for Mongrel????

A kid around the corner wants a 6’3", 19" wide Mongrel like board. Any ideas for nose and tail width? Thickness will be 2-3/8" to 2-1/2". It’ll have a reduced nose rocker. Want wide nose, tail and full rails.

I think 12.5-.75 tail and 11.5-.75 nose will be close to what you want for 19" wide if that’s the style board your after. Good luck, Brennan

visted a surf shop and actuallly looked at boards for once.

anyways, I saw the mongrel and the first thing i noticed was the way the rails carry up into the nose. its not easy to explain, esp. when I’ve never tried anything like it but say that you had the board laying level in the sand, fins down. from the tip of the nose to about an inch or two back, there’s a surface paralell to the sand. although it could have been a shaper error, I couldnt stop staring at it.

so if anything, I think the rails would be the most difficult part of replicating a mongrel.

Maybe this will help you.

It’s an Al Merrick “Mongrel”.

Great shot’s Coque, Says so much in one glance. You’re a real pro at this, mate. Can you teach me how you did this?

I’m anxious to hear how your Webber Squish tail compares to this one.

Coque-

How does that puppy ride?

Thanks, that’s so cool of you to do that. What we all should do is post pics and measurements of top boards. Then we could wind up with a great template catalog that we all could access. I have an 6’10" CI M13, an 8’0" Yater baby spoon, and a 6’8" CI from the 80’s, I could post.

Maybe Sways could make a separate folder for this venture??? Or maybe privatize it?

Hi Rich, you know i can do that trick 1000 times but i can’t get close to the foil of one of your fins (i’m really finding how hard it’s to make a good fin).

You can do that with any graphics program, as “Paint” for example if you use Windows. You just have to open one window with a new file and other one with the photo of the board, then you choose the part of the photo you want to copy, and then just copy (Crtl+Insert) and then paste in the blank new file on the other window and move the photo where you want it to be and it’s done… then just ad the text.

Tubedog, after some years riding only longboards, and a year experimenting with different singlefins, and anything i found (a year out of home) i bough this on a surf shop of the rack, this was my first shortboard trifin, and it rides really well: full template, low rocker, and the easy of use that gives you a trifin on beach breaks. The board catches waves easy, is fast and turns really easy (compared with a longboard or a singlefin); and the cut backs are just sweet.

But this board was just going to broke (i felt it in the last floater) and it was feeling a little big on the last sessions, so i decided to get a custom shortboard and i was really lucky.

Greg Webber was going to came to Spain to make few boards for some pros and some more shapes, and i was lucky enough to having him shaping me a board (thanks Halcyon!!! and THANKS Greg!!!). I meet him at the factory and he saw my Mongrel and i told him what i liked about the board and what i wanted to change, and then he added some things. One of those things is a new tail designed by Halcyon that Greg’s using on his shapes and that he really likes. It’s called the Squish because is the best of both worlds (sqash + fish).

I received the board last weekend but i was unable to ride it, but this next weekend i’ll test it and i’ll post the next week how it feels.

ALl i have now is this photo i show you here, but the next week i’ll have more photos and numbers.

Liki, i think that with this photo and the APS3000 you’ll have a great template, Swaylocks it’s about sharing, ask the ASP3000 people, Halcyon, Jim Philips, Bert… the list is so long.

I forgot to tell you that the board has a single concave on the center and a double concave with a mild vee at the tail. Good luck with your shaping!!!

Liki,

I’ve looked at many CI shapes and a 6’3 x 19 mongrel probably has a ~14.7 tail, ~11.7 nose. The vital keys to duplicating a CI board is the rocker, bottom contour, fin config and hip placement. But your friend/customer may not know the diff so what the heck…go for it.

Coque, muy bien los “photo tips” hermano!

Hey Coque,

That looks like GW’s “Afterburner” model with a wider, beefier tail. What were the fin placements on that one?

Here are some measurements I took from a 6’1 Mongrel: width 18 7/8, thickness 2 3/8, tail 14.0, nose 11 1/2. The obvious differences are a thicker nose, lower nose rocker at 4 1/2 " (laying flat) about 2/3 of usual, slightly lower tail rockerat 1 1/2". Sustancial vee about 1/4" high starting 24’ up from tail and keeping same height all the way back. with relatively deep double concaves about 3/16 " out the back, with a shallow center concave about 1/16" starting about 14" after a flat nose. Good luck in blending all those together

Nice feedback TD but you didnt include fin configuration…one of the most critical AND overlooked design features except maybe for rocker…

…I love hearing the younger guys…“dude I got a 6’0 swallow tail with this and that etc etc”…rarely a word spoken of rocker and fin placement…

I guess its harder to measure. My index finger is 3.25 long and I use it to measure center fin placement then I use the 12" mark to estimate front fin placement then I sight toein and cant…it takes some practice.

Crime-iny! I ran out of time. I did measure the rear FCS box and it’s 4" up from end of tail. Pretty standard give or take a smidge. Considering FCS fins trailing edge extend back from the back tab, your “rule of index finger” seems to be A-ok. Figure that the front FCS boxes are pretty standard too. I know Greg and some others cluster their fins a bit closer, but that’s more a personal preference. Since this board was for a kid, I figured standard is a good starting point.

Hey Coque,

Do you have the dimensions for that new Webber board? I think I would like to make a board similar to that one. Could you please post the Nose, width, tail, rockers, and thickness measurements? And where is the wide point on that board (is it off center)? That board looks unreal and makes me want to go out and surf!!! if you happen to know how far up the side fins are, that would be really helpful for me. Thanks a lot. Brett

I just posted a new thread with some information about this Greg Webber’s shape.

Coque.

PS: Distance from end of tail to back of front FCS plugs 11.5"
