Wondering if anyone has had any experience making/surfing bat tail boards. Trying to make a fun little wave board with wings, channels, and a bat tail to challenge myself with a difficult and technical board but want to make sure my assumptions about its performance are what I’m hoping it will be. Below I attached a model of this I made in Akushaper. I’d be open to hearing what everyone thinks!
hello if possible to share the file, so that it can be opened on akushaper.
i had a Rusty 5.10 batwing that had the look of that shape.
it was a quad by the way.
cheers and good waves.
Unfortunately, I just use the demo version. I’m a broke college student so I often just use it to model my boards to get an idea of the shape and volume for when I’m shaping. If akushaper sees this and wants to share the love, I would be super grateful haha! I love surfing quad, as the past 2 of the 3 boards I’ve made were quads. But, this one I am going to build a thruster with hopes that it’s super driver. Thanks, Ill be sure to look at that board to get a better idea. Cheers!
End tail shape don’t play so much. I bet you do a squash or square or swallow here not change so much how surf the board if you keep same surface size and hard rail under. More work to glass it well for sure.
I made a midlength that was a visually scaled up version of a smaller bat tail board I liked. I agree with lemat the tail width & rails were the more critical design features, I didn’t notice much difference from a broom tail.
I kept it very thick cuz I like extra foam, and had a lot of fun with that board. Eventually ended up selling it and got good feedback from the buyer.
Thanks for the output guys. I’ll be sure to keep you updated on the build. As I’m shaping the board I’ll keep it in mind and do it last as it feels best. Even if it may not affect the ride much, at least it will look cool! And my favorite part about board building is experimenting with designs so it might just be worth the extra time to see how it fares. Huck, thats very pretty board!
Cheers
this was it.
funny thing about the board was that it always wanted to do large arch turns.
fast but round surf.
maybe it was the quad setup?
maybe that wont happen to you with the double hip break?
cheers and good waves
Looks like a fun board. Love surfing quads, but they can be not as enjoyable at the beach breaks I surf on the East Coast. I’ll definitely keep this board in mind as I’m shaping since it seems to have similar proportions to what I’m planning on building. Thanks!
