batik inlay

A friend of mine is making a batik for me to have inlaid on my next board. The fabric would be cotton or rayon, maybe using RIT dye or a fiber reactive dye, which is more colorfast.

Has anyone done an inlay of a fabric dyed with RIT (maybe a tie-dye), and have you had any bleeding problems?

Will solvents in the resin damage rayon?

Is one fabric better suited for inlay?

If you have no idea what batik is, you treat the fabric with wax, dye it, then wash all of the wax out. Here’s an example:

Mix some resin and Try it on some scrap ,see if it runs then go for it

From my limited understanding, Rayon has a very close weave and delams.

Have a look at this thread http://www.swaylocks.com/forum/gforum.cgi?post=165578;search_string=rayon;#165578

cheers and good luck

My brother in law made a surfboard about 3 months ago. He made the blank with 2 components molding polyurethane, and glassed it entirely with tye-died cotton fabric. Colors went ok, they stay in the fabric very well, and look fine. I’ll post a picture of the board soon. Jack

I just did one, just a couple of days ago. I did a 100% cotton batik I picked up at a major chain fabric store, and no bleed whatsoever. But that was with fabric from a bolt at a major chain store. I agree that a test bit is the way to go.
