Bear All-around longboard

Anyone have any opinions on the Bear All-Around longboard?  Anyone ever ridden one?  I rode a Takayama In The Pink, which I understand is a noserider with some performance characteristics… I liked it.  Is a Bear All-around similar?  Also, what does it mean when it says it has a “chine” rail design?  Is that desireable?

Thanks!

Howzit myster, Let me be the first to welcome you to Swaylocks the king of surfboard building websites. I don't even know who makes Bear Boards now or that they still made. After McMillius  took the name away from Bill H. here on Kauai you never saw any new ones and Bill cut the logo off every hat he had with it on them. Funny seeing him wearing a hat with a big hole in the front. I burned all of my bear t-shirts and if Bill saw some one wearing a tee or a hat he gave them the stinkeye from Hell. Chine rail is a rail with a angled flat area on the bottom third of the rail, I had a few and have one on my present board and I like them if they are done correctly.Aloha,Kokua

I’m in line with the sentiments related by Kokua. I would not spend a cent on anything bearing the Bear label.

Good morning, Kokua… maybe should have started another thread, but… what does the chine do, and how can it be done correctly?

I agree ,  Bill got rolled on that one .

Most unsavoury .

Bear are made under licence in Byron Bay , Beau Young was riding them.

Good boards well made ,  they just come with a bad taste  for some

Cheers

Howzit Sammy,The reason Bill lost the Bear logo because he ent international and he was making money off the clothing and Millius or is it Mc Millius wanted his cut and even had his body guard throw Bill up against the wall during the talking session, Got it first hand from Bill himself. Bill has had a rough time lately. He and Rhonda divorced and she took him to the cleaners but he kept his piece of property only to have it forclosed on since Bill's money went from a flow to a trickle and couldn't make the payments after he built a house. He does have a beautiful lady to take some of the hurt away though. Been a friend since the Oahu days, love the guy. Aloha,Kokua

I know a fair bit about the whole Bear dispute and the way Bill was essentially robbed of rights to the name. I did not know the part about the bodyguard. From what I’ve read about Milius, I’m not surprised he has one.

Bill was always someone I respected. I’ve never met him, but everything I know about him indicates he’s the real deal and a class act.

Hey Huie

Your right Hutcho is doing them and I certainly wouldn’t hang shit on him , as I said “good boards well made” , he is a craftsman.

My comment about the bad taste for some are in no way directed at him , more to do with the way Bill was treated , I should have been more clear.

Hope all is well on your island paradise.

Cheers

Mick

what if you have one from the movie?

Bill e-mailed me and said it was a keeper…sorry to hear about his troubles

I thought Randy Rarick was shaping some of those surftech "Bear" labeled boards.

Like the "Waikiki Special" and the "Versa" 5 fin fun board?

Howzit Sammy, Yeah Bill told me about the guy grabbing him and putting him up against the wall. Bill is a great guy and can be funnier than hell but he can also turn on you if you do or say the wrong thing but I think that we all have some of that in us, I know I do. He is also a darn good flamingco guitar player. We were out at Hanalei one day in the mid 70's and this nice dbl overhead wave comes through and we both take off but Bill is like 20' down the shoulder from me but still goes. Well as we get to flat rock where the wave ends he does the style cutback and I come flying out of the barrel and just plow right into/over him. We come up and he says to me "S^%t mike I didn't thnik you would even make that wave you were so far back", but body got hurt or even dinged a board and we had a good laugh when we got back outside. Aloha,Kokua

The “Bear” label was brought to Aus by Mike Perry , who sold it after some years. He also shaped the boards used in the movie ,‘Big Wednesday’. The boards are popular in Aus , because they are well-made and good designs. Sad to hear about the bad blood.

**hey mick wasent meaning you      **
