8' mini-mal looks good for a smallish beginner. If its hws I would try to keep it as light as poss, since we know that newbies sometimes run into people LOL
I probably should have given more info - she is 21 and about 5’2".
I used to have an 8’ Angulo Chopper that was pretty wide (23.5" I think) that she took down to the beach (very) occasionally.
I think she likes the idea of having a surfboard built by her dad (an heirloom?) rather being really keen to surf.
For her 21st I promised to make her some furniture and gave the option of a surfboard because I had made one for my son.
I was surprised when she chose the surfboard.
It will probably be only the odd summer outing with friends when it will be used, hence the need for an easy to ride board.
This will be my 5th HWS and every board has progressively got lighter and I am looking to really get the weight down with this one.
Generally they seem to be overbuilt - I like the look of the one Paul Jensen started on this site recently but I haven’t seen an update on its progress.
My wife loves to surf, but hates carrying her longboard because its 22" wide and she can’t get her hand all the way around it. I made her a 7’6" HWS and made sure to make it narrower. Only problem is, I didn’t add the volume she needs for smaller waves. If I could do it again (and I will) I’d keep the narrower outline but go with a thicker profile.

this is a 7'6" hws I built that ended up at just over 21" wide. Much easier to carry than a longboard, and easy to ride. But I have to say, for easy paddling and stability, nothing beats a longboard!
