Hey Everyone,
I’ve posted here before but I was wondering what are some informational websites, books, or videos that will help in shaping your first board? I want to build like a Kane Garden style old school fish. I just am wondering about the glass on fins and how I would get those on and let them set. Any info. is greatly appreciated!

ok you have a few options the free one the moderately expensive and slightly more expensize. the free one would be spend a ton of time on here and read throught the archives theres ton and tons of information on here. if you ask a question chances are you will get an answer with in an hour or two. the second option is to buy the 101 series that john carper producers. theres one on shaping, glassing and airbrushing. collectively there like 60 to 70 bucks at www.surfingvideos.com. and then theres the slightly more expensive way if you go to damascus videos. com or www.foamez.com they have the master series with jim phillips. probably the best out of the lot. but as a beginer i would recomend the 101 series.
good luck
Alright, I’ve just been wanting a retro fish for a while, but they are pretty expensive. I would love to put my own time and effort into building one, but I don’t want to have the end product come out bad and have me not like it. I know I can’t expect anything near perfection for my first board, which is why I’m wondering whether I should shape one or bite the bullet and buy one.

SurferBoy,
If I can do it so can you. Make one. You’ll be stoked. There’s nothing like riding a board you made with your own hands. I just finished my cleanest fish, yet. But, it doesn’t ride as well as my flawed ugly green fish.Do it. my second board was a fish. Not that hard to make and that was way before I discovered Swaylocks. Did I say,“you can do it?” You can buy all the tools and materials and make two fishes for the price of a custom board.Mike
spend the 30 dollars for shaping 101 and sometime on here everyday and you can definetly do it. everyone has to start sometime. you are fortunate enough to have stumbeled across swaylocks. defiently build the board. you can probably build 2 boards for the price of one that you would buy at your shop. even if the board really sucks chances are your going to love it becasue YOU MADE IT.
you may also want to look at the " 14 dollar blank" thread in the search box. you can make two surfboards out of eps for the price of one clark blank. this way if you screw up the first one you can learn from your mistakes and go to work on the second eps blank. this way you havented wasted 50 bucks on a blank that has major flaws. if you build a board this way it should cost you about $150
search for the “surfboard design and construction” file in the archives. Its an old book in .pdf format that tells you everything about shaping. it also has a template for the fish you are looking to build. That book and this site was all i needed to get started shaping.
