I confess I bought a tool at Harbor Freight today (Gear Puller).
Saw this new Planner that they are stocking that is a step up from their entry level one. It would work to shape a surfboard. If your a beginner why not?

Why would it be any better than their cheaper planer?
Does the knob turn easy and assist in lifting the cut on the fly?
looks nicer, nice front handle, cuts to 5/64ths versus their cheaper planer 1/16 or 4/64 ths, --look Ma I can do fractions!
Some artists use paint brushes… some use pallet knives, sponges, fingers…
The difference is, they already know what they’re doing.
It’s funny how emotional people can get over tools?
I’m sorry–I invaded your thread
Otis: Don’t take me serious. I’m only joking! It’s all good. I was in Harbour Freight Today and I felt a little guilty so I looked for the positive in it. On swaylocks I see a lot of comments on Harbor Freight tools so I thought this planer might be a good beginner planer for someone who wants to give it a go.
It’s all good. I know your a quality board build and most likely have a Skil 100.
Kind regards and it’s everyones tread!

This is the real deal:
That handle will be in your way. Buy the next one down with the orange body and big gray knob. It goes on sale pretty often, I got mine for $29 and change.
The bigger one is way more powerful. You can always modify the handle! I had the orange one years ago and burned it up on my third board. I have the Hitachi's F20 and the F30: However for a beginner they are a bit expensive. Just trying to help.
Bought one of the orange planers a few weeks ago also for $29 with a coupon at Harbor Freight. Used it on my first board with a power planer verses sureform/sanding blocks. Basically all I did was use it to get the crust off the US Blanks blank I was using (switched to sureform and blocks after that) as I didnt trust myself with the thing much beyond that. But for that task it seemed to work really well. If it works 5-6 boards I got my moneys worth I guess. As with everything from HF, its always a gamble. I used to buy the 4.5" angle grinders and would use them till they burned out. Some would last a year or two and some only 6 months.
how a bout building your own tools to do the job correctly.
