Bending Corecell?

O.K. I’ve got my stringerless blanks from Marko 1.7lb. and I’ve been reading and searching and reading. Does anyone have any tips for bending the Corecell around the rails. I’ve been looking for a definative answer to heat forming. I wanted to use a full deck piece and wrap it over the rails. Short of scoring the foam and filling the grooves after bending. Can I use a heat gun and form the foam so that it can wrap the rail? I’m hoping that I can and then bag it to the core.

I used a heat gun and was able to bend 1/4" corecell all the way around the nose. Its very easy.

I was thinking about using a stringerless Marko when I do my first compsand. Please post as to how it goes.

Thanks DanB. I knew that someone had to have done this. My next question is did you have to use alot of heat from the gun? I’ve got my wifes heat gun, I mean hairdryer and was hoping that it might be enough. I’m going to use 1/8" Corecell and was hoping that it wouldn’t take much heat. Thanks again!

I think you will be fine - especially with the 1/8th inch stuff. However, if you have a little extra cash you might want to invest in a heat gun. My father in law was getting rid of his gun so I figured I might as well take it. I never thought that I would use it, but there’s been about 6 times this year that its came in handy.

Thanks Dan,

I just remembered that I have some scrap pieces of Corecell in 3/4". I’ll try the conair heat gun on it. Your right though about the heat gun. I don’t think that they are all that expensive.

I’ve learned more from step by step pictures here on Sways than from anything else. So I’ll try to take some good shots of the progression to post.

The blank is a 6’8" 1.7lb., they had a 1.2 but I chickened out and went with the heavier foam just in case. The blank is very nice, has a very hard smooth surface skin. Wish I could finish my shaped blanks like that. The blank has a centerline mark where the stringer goes.

As crazy as it sounds, you want to stick with the lightest weight foam possible (and its not just about lower weight). I like the 2 lb stuff on my big singlefins, but I wouldn’t use it anywhere else.
