Congrats, just got my surfing mag today.
Wow!
Some people don’t like Surfer mags hype, but thats no mean feat getting that award.
Havn’t got the mag, so im taking your word for it that he won?
I wonder if that will influence a whole legion of grommies to go out and purchase “non-traditional” boards?
Surfer mag are pretty influential of course… with the impressionable part of society.
But as many a politician knows, it’s your average joes that fill the voting booths.
A sign of things to come?
Kit
surfING mag(although some would argue that there isn’t much difference)…and this month (jan '07) has alot about alternatives to traditional pu/pe boards. Kind of a post-clark option issue with alot of discussion. I have yet to read any of it but i’m looking forward to it. Obviously this is proof that this is a new age of experimentation and branching off from what was the norm. I am very excited to have started shaping in this period of time, it gets me SUPER PUMPED.
George Orbelian and I worked with Surfing on the shaper’s family tree for this issue. Just hitting the stands. Bert’s on the tree. So are lot’s of swayaholics (sorry Roy, you’re not on it). Check it out.
oops!
Surfing, not Surfer… shows how much I know.
Thanks for pointing that out. sorry if I got anyone confused!
My comments are still valid tho.
Having an epoxy/eps/compsand ets exponent hailed by any prominent mag is big news.
Theres other guys who do some of these kinda boards who are recognised, but Bert never does PU/PE, so a vote for him is sorta like a vote for the technology…
As for the swaylocks connection - I’m probably not the first to say it, but there’ll be people who post on this site who will go on to make history (in the surfing world, and maybe beyond).
Not just the well known guys/pros that post, full credit to them already!
But theres almost certainly a backyarder amongst us who’s gunna re-write the rule book.
Think about it, never before has there been such a sharing of information in the surfing community (in any community, the power of the internet!),and now the push for the new tech that everyone has felt or seen, welcome or not.
Sounds like a formula for quick progression to me.
So who’s gunna pick up the ball and run with it?
We’ll Bert already did, thats why we’re chasing him!
But who’s gunna tackle him?
(I don’t mean that as a challenge to Bert, just a figure of speach/analogy!)
Kit
Edit: and it will be someone from this site, not surfER mags forum, what a melee that place is…
YEW!!! STOKED! Finally Bert is getting some recignission amounst the mags! Great to see.
Congratulations , Bert !!
…now ,
“Speedneedle” for Australian sprayer of the year ? [as well as Mr. Worthington , of course !]
ben
(sorry Roy, you’re not on it).
I’m not a shaper, and MY family tree includes Robert the Bruce ! (Nah na na na naaah na !)
And I’m SO glad that I don’t have to rely on surfing magazines anymore, they are so boring. . . ( read non interactive ) and they are too shiny to wipe the backside with. . . all told a horrendous waste of resources just to spread some Joe Shmoe editors opinion around the globe at vast expense.
Also, Skip Snead from surfing stole a 7’10" balsa board of mine, so stuff them.
Swaylock’s is light years ahead of ANY surfing magazine.
.
Well,
Are there some yearly SWAYLOCK’S AWARDS?
Tell me if there are, I wanna vote.
If not, I propose…
Peer polled SWAYLOCKS AWARDS!
we the punters vote for “the best” in our non-professional opinions for a number of categories.
For example:
Best sprayer (thanks Chip for the nomination, i agree)
Best new cut lap tool (thanks Greg Tate)
Most Lingually Dextrous Swaylocker (thanks Ambrose)
Most likely to succeed (Bert takes it out)
Most Improved (Sooooo many people vying for that one)
Biggest Dick (Me… no wait… thats a lie…)
anyway!
Please Mr Swaylock, could that happen?
Or should I make it happen myself?
(Once again, please tell me if this phenomenon(sp? too many rums) exists?
Kit
Oh no, not the Swaylock’s awards !
I never go to suit and tie functions anymore.
So there
Ah, what a shame, they already exist.
When are they happening again?
Kit
Congratulations , Bert !!
ben
Do you think he’s lurking here on the sly when Nev isn’t watching Ben ?
Being a wozzie I thought you might know
Congrats Bert, Now that you have the floor…
I’m expecting to see some 6’4" X 21 X 1 7/8" compsands in the shops soon!
And I’m so glad that I don’t have to rely on surfing magazines anymore, they are so boring. . . . . . all told a horrendous waste of resources just to spread some Joe Shmoe editors opinion around the globe at vast expense.
That’s funny , because I distinctly remember a 10 or so page article on YOU in a new zealand surfing magazine not that long ago Tom, complete with photos of you and your boards. peta
Nice. This is the best news. Glad to know I’m mimicking (read R & D, rip off and duplicate) the pro’s old school stuff.
The other day, our local surf shop said they were getting 20(?) FireWire Surfboards within the week. Will be joining the crowd to get some eyes on it.
Thinking the Complete Swaylock Surfboard Kit could look like this:
Bert’s balsa compsand construction, with oneula’s bamboo alternative
GL’s Resin Research Epoxy
Blakestah’s Surfing Trucks Fin System
Halcyon’s foils
Cheap digital camera for posting finished product
Anything else need to go in the Kit?
WM
Oh no, not the Swaylock’s awards !
I never go to suit and tie functions anymore.
So there
Oh c’mon Roy, you know there are some categories you would stand out in…
Most visible wetsuit
Longest Board
Longest Beard ??
Seriously though, I like the idea of a swaylocks award. It would be a lot of work for the moderators though if you wanted to judge contributions, artwork, innovation, ecological constraints etc… I think only Chip reads everything so maybe he should hand out the awards!! LOL!!
does this mean we have a reading assignment?
the six month rule: if’n its in the magazine
it six month old news.
bert shaper of the year is a short shif acolade.
his accomplishments obviously go beyond shaping.
the lad has assembled a system of production
that include inovations in multiple stages of the craft of the surfcraft.
does ''shaper of the year cover it?
does this mean that next years "winner’’ will be benchmarked
that 2007 guy?
will the award establish a warren for the annual winners to congregate
and become hutchmates? Or will the competition for the award replace
independant quest for knowledge with a jockying for position in the
lineup with the judges panel.like where do we all get an audience
with the panel of judges?
is there a line?
will the guy that changes his name to Anatoli Aardvark
get a better chance at the judges ear?
there ae explosions that radiate 360 degrees cubed
is that what happens in a vacum?
some stuff just blows up
is that because it is placed on a hard surface?
the growth of Ideas
as in the swaylocks realm format
I submit are like the former.an idea format here spreads exponentially.
after the ''award ‘’ the growth will take on a linear if not more guarded
constrained growth.loike putting water into a reservoir
then into a ditch
and then a pipe
and then a tank
and then controled by a spigot meteing out the dribble
a a price.
now that comrade berger has submited to the
marketplace,it follows that the marketing includes this morphicology.
now the award is followed by a presentation and the coincidental banquet
and sash and hat and photo oppertunity
and all that the ‘‘award’’ may intail
to validate the “credibility” of admirable berger.
is this the ‘’‘real’‘’ begining of …
or is this the end…
the world is watching
the media watching the world.
would that we were cognisant of the outcome of the award effect
would we be more llikely to be effected,ar affected.
ROOTS BABY ROOTS
did edison’s light bulb’s popularity
stifle him or stimulate him
congradulations are in order for sure
but will we ever see the likes of
the days of sharing and exponential growth of
idea explosion in unencumbered space
now that the media has co-opted ground zero ?
the swaylock awards has ,in the past had an air of good hearted humor
a warming fuzzy pat on the back by the like-minded .
I am tempted to wage an all out media bllitz kreig of historic dimensions
to have My self nominated for the designer of the year crown
next year.just as soon as I get my accolytes
at the aps3000 wharehouse to start milling my latest shapes
then I’ll get some riders and a coupla trade shows
and my place in history will be assured.
or mebe I’ll be the Tesla of the 21st century.
Perhaps you may have heard of Tesla?
he may have won the award or just missed out.
…ambrose…
my eye is on fine joinery.
the new jewelery
or mebe I’ll be the Tesla of the 21st century.
Perhaps you may have heard of Tesla?
he may have won the award or just missed out.
You mean dynamic theory of gravity Tesla?
Ambrose, you really are a special one here… keep ‘em comin’
Congrats Bert !
I have to admit I am a little surprised that Nev did not get the Award. The first few FW boards I saw had his signature on them. So congratulations also to Surfing mag for looking past the hype and getting to heart and soul of the new tech.
This is just the first of many acknowledgements to come wrt your contribution to the surfing world.
I have a friend who has been shaping for 35 years tell me yesterday that he never thought he would see this type of evolution in surfboard making in his lifetime. This was as I pulled my Balsa Compsand out of the vac bag.
regards
Christian
not to take anything away; good work Bert, but yeah; as it’s been said; this “shaper” award is late and incomplete as far as an accolade. Better award would be “boardbuilder”.
In response to “benchmarks” though, look who won last year…Stretch…same type deal; kinda weird shapes that were a little outside the norm. Hasn’t been scared of new construction techniques, bringing alternative methods from different watersports (kiteboarding, windsurfing) to the surf arena. Same idea…manifesto for change. Prolly Proctor or Randy get a nod next year. They’ve both been running big ads lately…seems about what it takes…other than the fact that everybody seems to think that Randy’s program is the death knell in domestic surfboard building.
Remember guys, who the editor in chief is for this mag…Evan Slater…he’s a smart guy and surfs bigger stuff than most of us here ever will…
