Bert ....

Hi there !!

I had a look at your excellent photo documenting of your fin system for your boards…

My question was regarding when you mentioned moulding cant into your side fins.

As you and everyone have probaly heard [and may be sick of hearing] on my ‘bonzer’ , I’m wanting to cant this: -

… and some OTHER ‘runners’ I’ve previously made, into a fins unlimited type box

The question is, do you think I should ‘sliver’ in the desired angle into the fcs tabs , and then set them in the resin / glass slurry in the [masked off ] box ?

Or is there a way to do it if I cut the tabs off ?

Also, for the 18-22 degree angle of the runners [depending who you ask !] …is an ‘angulator’ [wedge of wood] the way to go ?

…a mate suggested taping the two fins together end to end [if you get my picture] and then dunking them in the same gooey box, to ensure the angles are the same.

Any advice / experience shared by you [and others who have done this] will be MOST appreciated !

thanks !

…that said, if these are trade secrets you’d rather not share, then I totally understand. I certainly appreciate how much you have ALREADY shared on this site …thanks Bert !

Hey Chippers,

Are you talking about canting those particular fins? Are you wanting a canted fin with vertical base/insertion tabs?

yes. I’m all ears…any good ideas ?

i suppose thats one way to make sure i will check a particular thread …

what you said for the fcs tabs made perfect sense …

sand one side of the tabs on an angle so it leans over in the plugs , to the desired angle …

then get some mould release agent , pure and simple , mr sheen , something non stick , cover the inner surface of the plugs … screw your grub screw in and tape over the threaded hole , do your resin chopped glass sludge , keeping it as fibre rich as possible , and do what you suggested , tape in place …

be patient and wait 24 hours to crack it …

dont forget to unscrew the grub , that will leave a neat indent in the fin tab …

the fit will be perfect in the future coz of polyester resin shrinkage …

ok hope that helps …

so much stuff i could still post on …

this will be my only post today , been so busy lately it hurts … looks like sway time is gonna suffer …

regards

BERT

thanks very much for the help Bert !!
