Hi guys
what’s best fin system? traditional FCS? Futures? glassed on???
The one installed correctly!
For any given board design, if you really know which fin position works best for you, then glass-on. Otherwise, opt for a box that provides fore/aft adjustability. This is the only way to dial in the performance that is most suitable to you, and the waves you’ll ride. Fin position can make, or break, a board’s performance.
+1 for Thrailkill
I was not expecting serious answers to this thread.
But I can’t think of a better answer than Thrailkill’s.
Being able to move fins is critical imo.
I really like Gearboxes for that and the underglass install.
Would like to try 4WFS but haven’t done it yet.
Used to like Probox but they never got around to putting out an underglass install.
One of the things putting me off the 4WFS is that they won’t take all my 2 tabbed fins.
I used 4wfs on boards until I got toe-in and camber dialed. Great for toe-in adjustment and good for camber with the various inserts. Could also get 1/4" fore/aft movement by trimming fin tabs but not enough to get placement right unless it was good to start with.
I don’t put 4wfs into my new boards any more, but still use removable fins (futures, FCS, etc.) because I travel a bit. Glassed in fins and protectors take up the space of an extra board in the bag.
BTW, I’ve read and been told that you can adjust cant with any of the 2 tab systems using pinline tape.
The best one is the one you already have fins for.
From above: “but not enough to get placement right unless it was good to start with”
I learned alot about fore/aft from RedX boxes, and Robin Mair. The main thing I’ve dug about 4wfs is the circle inserts can be turned 180 degrees, so I could get lots of cant if I wanted/needed it.
Bill hit one of the foundation nails on the head - you can reallllyyyy change the way a board works by moving fins around. The same fins.
It’s tough too, as was pointed out - fins you have, fit???
Probably not that helpfull, but hopefully a start.
