Best Nose riding fin?

What do you think would be the best nose riding fin for a 9’ Longboard? I was thinking of a Wing nut, but would like to hear from others. Thanks, Stephen Berube

Thanks, > Stephen Berube Hi Stephen, There are lots of 9’0" boards out there, I just stripped the wax off mine this evening to see I have a cracks to repair but things look pretty good. Every surfer/board will find something different suits them. How big you are along the boards specks, rail & bottom configuration have allot to do with what fin will work best for you. You welcome to email me if you’d like. I’d be glad to recomend something from one of the big manufactures that’s tried and true or make you something of my own design after talking to you if you’d like. As a rule of thumb unless your a really big boy of fin of 8 to 9 inches with a fair amount of rake along the leading edge and enought profile in the tip to hold you in will get the job done on a 9’0". True Ames has a good selection. The wingnut fin is real loose but works quite well for nose riding I have a 10’0" Retro that I surf a wingnut in small surf. It’s allot of fun. I wouldn’t use it in big surf though. Hope this is of some help. Good Surfin’, Rich, Halcyon Custom Fins. (windwateronstone@hotmail.com)

(windwateronstone@hotmail.com) I haven’t built the board yet, was trying to get a idea so i can order one and the box. It’s going to be a 9’x 22"x 3" out of a 9’1" triple stringer. It will have nose concave with 50/50 rails. Don’t on what the nose and tail measuremnet are yet, but maybe 17" nose and 14" tail, maybe. single fin with box. Just wondering what to use for a nose riding fin. Thanks for your help and input. Thanks, Stephen Berube

Cool, thanks for all your help. Later, Stephen Berube P.S. It looks like i’m going with a Rainbow

Cool, thanks for all your help. Later, Stephen Berube>>> P.S. It looks like i’m going with a Rainbow For a single fin board like your talking about when It comes to Rainbow fins, I’d go with an 8.5" wingnut cutaway if they make it in 1/2" sizes. It’ll nose ride just fine. 8.0" may not be enough fin in this pattern for you. 9" should be plenty. Good luck, Rich

What do you think would be the best nose riding fin for a 9’ Longboard? I > was thinking of a Wing nut, but would like to hear from others. Thanks, > Stephen Berube I have a noseriding fin from Island Fin Co. called the Nuuhiwa that is similar but to but not exactly like the Fins Unltd. Takayama 9.5" DT-MTP fin that works not only for noseriding but allows me to easily pivot a heavy, thick, fat railed plank (board # 16) I shaped for small south shore waves on Oahu. The board is 9’0", nose 18", 22 1/2" wide, 14 3/4" square tail. I used a 91Y blank, a 50/50 rail that has a subtle edge underneath. That slight edge seems to help keep the board responsive but still have that suction needed from a 50/50 rail to keep the board from sliding out.

I was also thinking about getting a Fins Unlimited DT-MTP for my dedicated noseriding board, untill somone explained that a fin with a lot of area will ride high in the wave. This makes sense, since it will capture more water while being pressed towards the beach by the wave. For noseriding, you want that tail lower in the wave. I was thinking something like the True Ames Velzy Nose rider, True Ames Velzy Classic, Fins Unlimited DT-BNR, or the Rainbow Wingnut Sweep.

Should be up sometime next month. Thanks everyone for all your info and help. Later, Stephen Berube

What does Russ ride, the more tail rocker a board gets the more vertical the fin needs to be. This is because the increased rocker causes the turns to be so much shorter and a pivoting method of surfing becomes more useful. Old school style nose riders, with the entire board very flat, can make use of a fin with a great more rake in the tip of the fin. This allows the fin to give the board more punch combining the straightness of the board and the rake of the fin. Jim

Jim Doooohhhh!, I cant believe it took me this long to figure out who you were Jim. I’ve been wanting to stop by and say hi. What are the shop hours? and thanks for the advice. Sounds like my board may be better off with one of the more vertical Fins Unlimited models.

585 Westlake ,Encinitas 760 753 6299 cell 427 1763 I stopped by today, but you were out. Although I shouldn’t have, I splurged and bought a fin from Fins Unlimited. It’s the JT 10C, and it has really livened up the board. The fin makes the board ride totally different then the huge skeg I had on it before. It is notably easier to turn, and pivot, and the best part is the tail rides a little lower with the reduced area making nose riding even on little shorepound wakes possible. Unfourtinatlly, in all the giddy fun I was having my ankel smacked the rail and put, yet another, crack in the beutiful resin coat. This brings me to my next question? Can you do matching re-coats on resin tinted boards, or am I better off taking it to the original glasser to get that perfect color match. Im in the area alot, so I’ll continue to stop by and check if your in. P.S. I forgot his name, but I really appreciate your co-worker lending my the philleps head to put in the new fin. [smile]

[smile] Sorry I missed you Russ, I went to the airport to get people coming for the ASR show in San Diego this week. Alot of times it is best to do with as little fin as possible, the speed increases, but the minusees are slower turns and a looser tail.

[smile] Hi Russell, I went to the Fins U. web site but I didn’t see a JY 10C listed there. What’s the fin look like? You’re right, fins make a huge difference in how a board acts. Good Surfin, Rich

Rich, I didnt know untill yesterday that Fins Unlimited makes all the fins for Joel Tudors boards. Go to www.joeltudor.com and look at his “Classic Pin/ Square” to see the 10C.
