Best sub 6' twin keel fish surfer of all time,

Howzit rooster, Stevie Lis does OK on them himself and I have surfed a lot with him. Aloha,Kokua

Hi kokua,

I bet he can!  I’ve probably surfed with him a bit, too.  Way back when.  He was probably one of the guys telling me to get the f…k out of here… I type this with humor and have no bad feelings about those days or anyone.  I can’t blame those guys for protecting their spot.  That’s just the way it was and I loved surfing then and I love surfing now. Lis’s design has re-invigorated my surfing, personally.  I make my own now, of course, and think it’s a pretty easy board to surf and a good board for an aging guy like me who wants to keep surfing a shorter design.  I’m still a ‘soul seventies’ surfer.  Mike

Might not be what you mean by twin keel, but it’s sub 6 and a twin-

In any case this guy has got to be one of the best twin fin surfers around.

I agree llilibel, Really like the way Dave becomes one with the ocean. Thanks for sharing the video my friend. Mahalo,Larry

Shark Country/1st Break 1971-1972

Mr. Bushtree Stump

Messed up teeth, a one foot afro and about 5'4" tall x 200 lb hawaiian troll.

looked like a 5'4"x 200lb version of buttons with worse teeth and a bigger 'fro

same big hawaiian no teeth smile though

Pretty much ripped the inside doubleups apart stand up surfing on a big twin fin knee board which wasn't unusual at the time.

could've been a twin fin waterskate as well.

There's a video of Val on the SurferBB surfing walls in the 60's on his finned paipo so surfing such things was not all that unusual at the time.

this is well before most of these kids were conceived.

For the younger generations I think guys like HopTong Smith and his standup Morey boogie board hollywood actor pal Chris Taloa can surf fishes with the best of them.

the clip below is state of the art Val Ching on the first "fish" surfing the wall in waikiki in 1963.

Now ask yourself what and how was the rest of the world trying to surf in 1963?

there's alot of guys out there who can't afford a surfboard of their own and learn to rip on garbage in this case a plank of wood with a fin

RK

now, can he just finish his movie?!

I forgot to say why RK:

he’s smooth; he connects sections up with down-the-line speed, yet he also has a  radical hard driving bottom and top turn

I think he really synthesizes the old school fish style with surf/skate style - now that is fun to watch!

illilbel,

yah.  I really like the Rasta surfing on the twin keel fish, too.  Smooth, graceful carving.

RK rips!  I love to watch him surf.  Mike

Mush to mack ?

Mirandon again   , wait for the section at 3.50

Not strictly a twin keel I know , but that fin and tail arrangement has quite a history.

I'd like to see some film of Jim Banks riding his fish in macking Indo , too !

Of course, the basic question is all so subjective it’s impossible to answer.  The current level of surfing is mind boggling.  Even recreational surfers.  Eli flat out rips the shit out of it.  But, for me he still has has the herky jerky stye of a modern thruster rider.  I prefer smooth, hard, carves like Malloy or Machado.  Is that the best? Nope.  Impossible to say.  I’d like to see Jim Banks surf one in macking Indo, too. Mike

It doesn't really matter who the best Fish Rider is......

Find a board that works , go out and get some waves..........

That's what Ben was doing......getting some waves...........Thanks Ben........

Thanks for some actual vid of some stoked bros keelin over. I’ve been keelin over here the last couple days and of all my boards I still have to put some time in on the fish to surf it as good as I know I can. I personally like the wide arcs and carves and am going there when I can get out of the pocket. I notice the fish responds so well to a low center of gravity. Side note, repaired a leggy last season and was using that one today, was a tad overhead out there today and thought I’d give the leash a test, “snap”! That sinking feeling. Time to swim. I was still smiling cuz I had had a couple nice drops and walls and I got to it before it got to the beach.

So, who is the best? I d#$m sure want to be my best. So before a wrong vibe starts brewing in here. Go get your group hug in some other thread.

The low center of gravity was helping but takes longer for me to move back and forth. I must work on that tomorrow. I’ll be there.

Curren on a few variations of fish:

I really like the swoopy turns of the Skip Frye model at :48, and then contrasting that with the hybrid thruster right after.

Seen them all … Nuuhiwa … for sure

Went hunting for the Malloy clip again – some fun stuff to watch here – Rastovich exploits the design to a very high degree

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3kIM0mXgzps

mmm Malloy, Rasta, Tomo - some great surfing. Never disliked watching Curren ride anything. Any vid suggestions to see Nuihiwa? Mirandons got a quick slick foot move and some heavy waves in his history.

Good thing is it looks like a week long six foot swell here and dug the new leash out of the bag in the closet. I’m making some new plywood keels if I can stay out of the water long enough. I could shave off some deck volume at the rails also on the next fish.

i really like this clip

I agree with you Rooster - thruster style doesn’t look pretty on a fish - I think they look best when they flow, not so much for the hack.

Rasta is for sure on top of the heap - he allows for the board to do what it does best - and I think he’s got to be one of the fastest as well, he gets that thing flyin’ in trim!

Howzit cornelyus, Tyler is definitely having some fun and very smooth style.Aloha,Kokua

Rasta, Machado, Tyler Warren, Nuuhiwa, Curren, Tudor, Malloy…  one thing all these guys have in common is that they all surf well on anything, longboards, alaias, thrusters, fish…anything.

One common thread I see in all the video clips posted…good surf!

Here it’s frickin flat!!!   I can finally surf everyday and it’s friggin flat!  Arrrrrrgghh
