Best sub 6' twin keel fish surfer of all time,

Frontside, backside, mush and mack. Take off the gloves and let her rip. Who really is/was the best ever fishmonger? Don’t forget why either.

Was out on my 5’10 the past couple days and same as usual, really lights up when I least expect it then? Well I’ll just say some inspiration wouldn’t hurt. Seems to give some of the biggest surprises of all my boards while being the least predictable as well. I can’t even remember seeing anybody really surfing one of those fishy’s well recently around here.

Who is/was the greatest and why? Video is encouraged.

Dan Tomo

the skinny guy in this video is surfing really well on what looks like a proper fish:

couldn't figure out how to imbed

The stills of Tomo look inspiring, what about tech talk on these things. I’ve got two sweet spots on my fishy and in between seems like ob. It’s like a finicky feline. fickle fish or mercurial madonna. I’m trying to get away from the hop. whack, hack, gouge and crouch crew round here on something short. My right foot is beginning to hate being planted over a thruster cluster and flick, flick flick. Like hopping up and down on a tricycle/pogo stick pretending to be ape like, yuck.

Thanks for the vid also.

why are you limiting your question to short surfers?  I know some guys who are pretty darn good, but they are over 6 feet tall (and they ride fishes).

ha.

aw c’mon Keith, your not under six and ride an over 6’ do ya? Short rail line fish in particular. The others are in a different class for me.

I’ve got a video, cant remember the name, that has one of the Malloy bros. surfing Jeffries.  I like the way he surfs a fish.  Smooth, hard carving. The best I’ve ever seen in person was 2 gringos in approx. 1973-74 ripping apart San Miguel, BC.  They looked totally feral and spoke fluent Spanish.  My father had brought me and a friend down there for my B-Day.  We were in awe.  Mike

My vote: Tom Curren, Rob Machado, Eli Mirandon

David Nuuhiwa

Hands down - smoothest surfer on a fish - or pretty much anything else for that matter…

My most embarrasing moment surfing: South side Huntington Pier 1970 - drop in on a nice left towards the pilings and hear a “Hey…Hey”. Look back and don’t see anyone…Again,“Hey” a bit louder…quick look back and there’s David engulfed IN the foam ball - he was in there before I ever took off - never saw him - kicked out REAL quick

Apologized profusely on the paddle back - he was totally cool about it. Think he said, “That was a nice one, don’t you think…”  I’m thinking, “Shit, I just cut David Nuuhiwa off. I’m a kook…”

It was a nice one though…

Second the vote above for Dan Malloy – the cutties in that J-Bay clip were especially … um … epic. He looked like some kind of bird – big arms out looping cutbacks at speed on speedy J Bay faces. Fantastic. Cannot find online anymore anywhere.

Also: Kenvin, Tomo, Rasta.

someone mentioned j-bay, reminding me that I forgot to add Derek Hynd to my list!

This dude's pretty darn good - the family pedigree helps I spose.

Eli Mirandon

There's a link to the Malloy stuff in the column too , ' sprout retro fish part'.

Nice vid - Eli Mirandon rocks!  His dad was one of the innovators of the twin-fin split tail surfboard.  Guess that's what you were referring to by "family pedigree"?

Funny, Keith.  You must be a lawyer or sumptin…

I learned to surf in the seventies at OBSD and the Cliffs. These boards are more popular now than ever.  I don’t really recall too many people riding them, ‘back in the day.’  Most of what I saw were made in garages or ridden by guys who wouldn’t bother talking to a kook like me except to say, “get the f…k out of here” or knee boarders at Big Rock.  I don’t ever recall seeing them lined up in the racks of surf shops or anything like that. It was mostly rounded pins, eggs, and some swallows. Interesting.

I like the way the skinny goofy foot in ChrisP’s video surfs his fish, too.  Kind of like Machado. Mike

Guess he doesn’t know “fish don’t go backside.”

My votes

Rasta , Tomo , Dan Malloy , Tom Curren , Tudor and I was really impressed with Joe Curren surfing Rincon in OCD.

Cheers

Yes the skinny man does it right with a cool casual style to boot, Tyler Waren is a class act on the keel and them little ponys he rides.

The first 2 waves Tom Curren catches in Morning Glass on a proper Frye fish are exactly prefect.

Rex Huffman on his knees in reduced medium mode, doing it the way it was originally designed for.

Bunker Spreckles rock and rolling at J bay.

Dan Malloy on the Green fish in Sri Lanka in Sprout.

Rasta really makes those suckas move out.
