Best way to fix partially broken center fin box

I have replaced side and center fin boxes before but I’ve never had one break this way before. The submerged boulder caught a 10.5" heritage fin and jacked out of the box forward.

I had one thought of just permanently affixing a fin, glass on, but I wondered if that would work.

Or, is there any other way to remedy this fin box without replacing it?

Do you have the other piece? Personally I’d just replace it

“Partially broken”?
Hell, I’d call that f**ed.
In the 25-30 years I spent doing ding repairs I never saw one break like that. Usually, the box pops out at the front, and caves in at the back.
I’d say you’re gonna have to get the rest out and start over. You could just glass a fin in there. Depends on how much work you want to do, and whether you like switchng fins often.

I’d route that out and replace it, you’d never know it happened. Unless you had a jig, I’d pay someone that had one to route it, and then set and sand the new box yourself if you know how to work with resin.

I think i might be pregnant…
Sometimes there’s no half way…you are pregnant. man up.

Little known fact that white colored fin boxes shatter more than black ones.
Way more brittle.
Black also bonds better than white to resin & fiberglass.
Replace it.
15 minute job.
5 minute route.
5 minute resin & fiberglass
5 minute grinding it down.
Done.

Hi guys, thanks to both of you for your advice. I’ll route it out. I’ve got a little dremel router attachment, I’ll have to work up a jig though.

Funny enough, I just went thought this same issue. http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/what-best-option-to-remove-broken-fin-box this might help. I finished it up on friday and surfed it this weekend, and was pleasantly surprised. Sadly the Kooks were in force with it being the weekend and I was un lucky enough to run over ones board who was staring at me, froze and just stood there. So I will have another project on my hands this week.

Watch out Albacore, these things tend to come in threes…

Im accepting it as the surf karma’s way of giving me some more practice for future uh-ohs. After my first real ding being the box exploding on me, I have also accepted my fairly new board to be used and with character. Each surgery I have to perform from here out just add’s to the character, and will fruit the skills I need later down the road for more serious repair jobs. Cheers to virgin boards without dings yet, and another to the graveyard for the thousands of “well used.”
