Best Way To Tuck Laps Without Loosening The Fibreglass

Start from the very back of the board and work your around in a circle? Mate it together somewhere? Also does it change from shortboards to longboards etc?

If you are having problems with a squeegee, use a spreader to tuck the laps. You could be pulling too hard and loosening strands of glass, and a spreader( for me at least) seems to give me that lighter touch. free laps I presume??? If you do a cut lap, you would be cutting all that crap off if you get what I'm saying. then again, free laps require less prep work andcut laps are not necessary with silane and clear resin.

Start from the middle and work your way to the ends, then you may need to work from the tip back an inch or so to get the ends tight…

You know me, I dont’ care enough to bother with that… I work to the tips and work the tips by hand, and if I need to grind and fill w/putty so be it… I’ll be sanding, and I’ll cover it with the finish coat anyway…

Work from middle to the outsides, both length and widthways. Ligther full length strokes just to finish off.

Never work towards the middle.

Applying the right pressure and squeegee angles (sort of a three dimensional thing) is the only real mystery, and it's no mystery... learned by practice... and more practice.

One thing to think about Dean - If you use epoxy, you can get a lot of time to work it out, but then again I’m sure you can with UV PE too.  It’s good old PE that goes off in short order which requires a more speedy approach.

Are you serious ???

How the hell have you managed to be a pro board builder for as long as you would have us believe but have zero clues as to the fundamentals of glassing a board ???

Your recent postings resemble the inane postings of previous member called Deanbo who clagged the forum in an attempt to move himself up the postings rating scale.

You have had so much expert advice given to you by guys like Kokua , Bill Barnfield , Mike Daniel and Jim Phillips for so long yet you can’t tuck laps yet ???

I’m not as charitable as some and don’t like it when someone is having a lend of well meaning crew like the above mentioned members .

My honest advice to you if you are genuine is give it away and get a model train set.

Flame out.

Howzit wildy, You seem to have it down and it is more of a feel thing than anything else plus the angles and pressure are the trick but practice makes perfect, sometimes since I have known guys who just couldn't get it right no matter how many boards they glassed. I think there is a bit of natural talent in the mix and that is why some glassers are better than others. I remember back in the 70's there was a factory that hired some women and they were real good because they had a nice touch and feeling for laminating. Aloha,Kokua

Working in a circle is best. Round and round...long,short, big,small,young,old.... Shapeware is really cool. Only on Swaylock's...

Did I say I couldn’t tuck laps? It’s pretty simple. Pull the glass as taught as you can across the board without pulling it off the foam. It’s easier to do this part on the deck. Then tuck your laps without putting slack back into the cloth on the flats.

Next time watch how your fibreglass twists into an s shape as it crosses from one side of the stringer on the deck to the rail on the same side. That is if you can pull the fibreglass taughter to begin with.

Even better still learn why sanding the bottom of surfboard is harder than sanding the deck. You might be surprised at what you don’t know.

Jeeeeeze Moonieeee .........

I'll be up your way towards end of month was going to drop by and slap you on the back and say G'day ...... but after that tongue lashing I might make sure you've had a couple of cold ones before i try and be social (lol) (lol) (lol)

Settle down ya crusty old salt ...... start'n to sound like "Huie"

Still might drop by though .....

Kokua, all the laminators I trained and worked with in Thailand were girls. They learned quickly and do better work than most. And they don't carry the 'cool surf scene' baggage.

The weave twisting can be avoided by laying out and preparing your fabric weave to be straight and square before laminating. Worth doing because there are some twisted boards out there caused by bad fabric prep before laminating. Think twice before laying out fabic on an angle to try and save material...

Well said Foamsta…

Or, as we say up in this corner of the Pacific, “Mellow out…”

Foamsta

You’re probably right I may have gone in a bit hard…

Maybe I should have said

" Dean it’s time to start the practical side of the exercise ,  7yrs of theory has prepared you well , time to go out and make that surfboard , go for it Dean !!! "

Aaaahhhh… now that feels better.

See you if you’re up this way for those coldies.

Cheers

Howzit ildy, When it comes to prepping my glass brfore laminating I am rather anal and like to make sure the glass is as perfectly straight down the stringer and perpendicular to that with the cross weaved glass and when I look down the stringer I really like to see 1 strand running down the midle of the stringer. Then since I do mostly free laps I try to make my glass rail cut around the board a even and smooth so it almost looks like a taped off lamination. I do take pride in my work. Aloha,Kokua
