between a fish and a hybrid

I have two “main” boards. One 5’9" Kane Garden twinzer fish with typical wide fish tail and thick. The other board is a Pearson Arrow modern “hybrid” fish 6’2" x 14.5" x 19.75" x 15" x 2.5" (see picture). I use both primarily for beach break Half Moon Bay to SF area. I weigh 160 lbs at 5’9". I am trying to find a board that is something between these two boards in terms of length, thickness, width. Not sure what fin setup. Anybody have any recommendations for size and make surfboard that would bridge the gap between these two boards? I like the hybrid if it is more low tide ocean beach type conditions and/or a lot of backside rides. The fish is a little tight going backside but great frontside especially if it is clean and not so powerful waves. Say ocean beach clean windswell about 4 ft. Looking for my next board by end of summer. Any recommendations? I recently got a 5’6" Steve Brom Keel fish and it worked great when I had small clean conditions down in LA are but I am happier with my Twinzer fish in terms of average beach break. -Chris

If you’re looking for something for a little bit of summer windswell, sloppy, groveling surf, or to compete with the longboards at the Jetty & Sloat & Lindy, you could try a bigger (slightly) more traditional fish. Say around 5’10" with a full template (no stingers) and twin keels. Almost no rocker, just the thickness taken out from the bottom so the deck is flat.

hi surfcrs !

maybe you could make yourself [or get made] something like this ??

this one is 5’11"x 20" x 2 1/2 " …

…with options galore for fin setups !! [it’s three years old in the top photo …]

Well, I made mine. But Bob Miller’s making some beautiful fish these days and Mandala fish always work and I surf a lot with a guy who has a number of Brom fish…

I’m guessing you’re on the Penninsula? Bob’s shop is out at the Coyote Point park. You have to drive in past the golf course to the picnic area. Its the rental shop with all the kite stuff. Opens 11 am most days except Mondays. Called ASD Windsurfing or S2A sports or something. Just go ask for Bob.

Here’s the weird part - he doesn’t shape there & doesn’t have any surfboards there. He sells surfboards through Palm St SS in Santa Cruz (you can go by there to see his work and maybe one from the rack will work for you) which use to be his shop, Longboard Heaven. But he mostly just shapes a few rack boards for Palm and customs for friends. You’ll be fine. Even if you don’t order one from him, you’ll learn a ton just talking for a while. Ask questions, you won’t find a lot of other guys as willing to talk…

And say hello.
