Im making a board for a friends company and he want his logo to be big, somewhere around 3ft long. Im gonna try and print it on rice paper at my other friends sign shop ,where they have a big printer. Has anyone done logos this big? And what problems might i face doing this?
there is a guy with the screen name marlee who owns a german company that does cloth “fleeces” with screened images. they come on a cloth similar to polyester fiberglass and range in thickness depending on the opacity desired. there is not so much worries about air bubbles and wetting out with the cloth and it keeps nice, solid, crisp lines after being laminated in where rice paper can blur. also they can make the image any size you want. there is a post in the industry talk section called “still searching for shapers…” that has many examples of their product. might be worth checkin out
Howzit ONFIRE, Use the banner format to print it, you should be able to print easily over 3 feet. Get rice paper on a roll and it sould work just fine.Aloha,Kokua
Thanks for the help. Im gonna try and get some of that thicker rice paper. It sounds like it would be easier to glass and print on. Kokua, do you know a place online where i can get rice paper on a roll? I think surf source sells the thicker stuff, but its by the sheet.
Howzit ONFIRE, Try a stationary store, if they don’t carry it they may know who does. I have used the thicker rice paper before and it worked just fine.Aloha,Kokua
The thick stuff on the roll is “No.6/MMK Sumi Art Paper, size 11 in. x 60 ft”. Importer is Yasutomo & Co, San Francisco, CA. You can get this at Japanese shops that specialize in calligraphy supplies. That said, you will have a hell of a time managing a lam that is 3 ft; tearing, wrinkles, alignment will be a problem. My advise is to cut it and do it in sections. There’s a company in Cardiff (Ca) that specializes in big graphics who had some nice samples at last year’s Scared Ride expo: Headline Graphics (www.headlinegraphics.com). They do this on a cloth, and the color work is far superior to what can be achieved with rice paper. All you need is a photo, original artwork, scan, etc. Please post the photos when you finish it whichever way you decide to do it.
