Hi Danny. “Surf Session” is one of the french surf magazines. The big surf challenge has been going on each year since 1990 I think, except for a few years when the waves didn’t show. It’s an invitational contest. This year, the winner was Manu PORTET. And most sources said the waves were around 3 meters with occasional 4 meters sets.
NICE PICS!!! Thanks for posting.
Tres impressive Balsa!
Those waves look very challenging …
[mode “been here, done that” on]Oh, no, it’s just a big drop actually…[mode “been here, done that” off]

AHAAA !
…So THAT’S where you are now , and why we haven’t heard from you lately eh , LeeDD ??
bet this guy wishes made it into that right barrel
And most sources said the waves were around 3 meters with occasional 4 meters sets.
Which would make it 1.5-2OH… looks a tad bigger than that to me. Or that’s some really small surfers.

Håvard

Those waves are 6 to 8 meters, call it 20 feet

Let’s call it Royish 20 feet, Hawaiian 8 feet and French 10-15…
Let’s not, let’s call it what it is !
Feet don’t shrink or expand with name or nationality, they are definable and I’m calling BS (again) on the whole undercalling of wave size idiocy.
Nice pictures.
.
Hey
Has that other big wave spot down the coast towards St Jean de Luz been workign this winter…
Looks like a nice day at guethary… Was anyone crazy enough to try the left.
You mean Belharra? This one?
I haven’t heard of it working lately…
At least one guy went for the left, I have seen him on the video. I’ll try to find the link and post it.

That’s why I like the ankleslop, knee, waist, chest, head, overhead x n, ‘oh my god that’s big’ scale much better. Not some much confusion about measuring the front or back of the wave, etc. Who surfs the back of the wave anyway? Besides, if you call it 8’ hawaiin that should be french 16’ or not?
It looks big regardless. Also looks very makable and fun. Ofcourse if I’d been in the water I’d probably shit my suit. Thanks for the photos.

Håvard
Havaard - I agree - Head high etc…much better scale…only that I’ve recently noticed people downsizing this too!
I would like to make a comment or two about the wave calling size thing, that looks like geat waves in France, perfect in fact. Firstly my theory on why Hawaiins call the surf smaller, is that , they are used to bigger waves and they is no need to freak themselves out calling it bigger than they need to. The same applies to us all. It’s funny now how the towin guys are measuring every inch, with a ruler and good on them, why not , the rest is your own personal pleasure or agony, which ever way you want to go. I was in G’Land about ten years ago with Bruce Lee, who is’nt an actual fan of Boogie boarders, anyway we were having dinner this night and this boogger started talking about the size of the surf, I suppose you could call it 3 to 5 foot Aus size, any the young bloke was calling it 1 to 2’, that was the best I’ve heard. By the way that surf in France, 10 to 12’ max, cheers H.
I dont know if its true or not but i heard Hawaiins called the surf smaller than it is on the surf report to keep the crowds down. as i said its just a myth/rumour and i dont know if its true or not.
end of thread hijack, sorry balsa.
No offense, Josh. I like it having people calling these waves 20 feet or more. It makes me feel like a real big-wave rider. And it means that this close-out set that barely missed drowning my friend Daniel and I back in 1973 must have been 40 feet after all… We both thought it WAS 20 feet…
