Bilge pump vacuum?

I was thinking would it be wild to make a vacuum pump out of this:

It says it doesn’t burn out even when run dry, so I figure you could put a fitting over the suction end and blammo, 12v vac pump? I’ve seen heaps of people use aquarium pumps, so I figure this isn’t much different?

Awaiting scathing replies!

Consider yourself scathed!

Those types pumps are designed for 12VDC (not AC) intermittent use with water. If you ever watch one run in a boat you will see the last hoseful of water (output of pump to hull fitting) run back down the tube and out of the base of the unit once the power is removed.

Bagging requires a pump+bag+hose system that is quite airtight and that can run for several hours at a time without issue.

I am afraid you’ll spend a couple evenings trying to make it compatible with hose fittings only to discover that it is not working as planned- gets hot and does not draw enough vacuum to be useful.

I would hold out for a small Gast type pump. Mine was 40$ US and has done many jobs with no issues.
