Bing Pipeliner East Inspired...

Sorry for the delay, folks… I had to take two days off to support my sister during a terrible ordeal: she was awarded the french “Légion d’Honneur” for her medicine works in geriatrics and she had to pronounce an acceptance speech, thanking all her teachers since nursery school untill today, you get the picture… She nevertheless succeeded to captivate her audience with some humorous flashes such as: “I want to thank both my brothers to whom I owe to have developped a very strong survival instinct…” Well, this has no connection with surfboards whatsoever, but it is a lifetime chance for you guys to see me in a suit and tie, so I thought I would digress a bit:

Sister is in the middle, I’m on the far left, others include brother, brother-in-law, children, nieces…

Now, back to our normal schedule… I came back home only to find wasps everywhere in my shop… They must like resin smell or something. Well, I had to close every air intake and inject insecticide, wait for one night, then vacuum clean wasps bodies lying everywhere…

All this to explain why I’m just starting to finish the “replica” right now… Here are the latest photos to make you wait patiently:

The last picture doesn’t do justice to the exact shape of the rail. It’s actually more eggy but holding the rail with one hand and shooting with the other one isn’t that easy…

“Here are the latest photos to make you wait patiently:”  While I’m not sure about the patiently part (just kidding) the shots are certainly giving me a nice picture of the progress.  Excellent work, my friend.

Any updates?

Not very significant, just a general fine-sanding. I will probably deliver the blank to Jeffrey on saturday or sunday and then he will have it glassed (most likely by the guys at “Surf Experience”, the very same ones who glassed PierreB’s 12’ glider). So i’m afraid you will have to wait untill it’s glassed to see the finished product, now…

damn I thought I would be on the list to glass that thing… sweet job balsa but I’d already comment on your blog.

Chacal, like I said: “most likely”…

Actually, I don’t know what Jeffrey planned to do as far as glassing goes. BTW, why are you all good glassers so far away north from me?

Jeffery,

Who ever you get to glass it, be sure to get pic’s along the way and post them.

Bing, we’ll definitely make sure to document the glassing and get the pics on-line.  8oz volan with cutlaps, no deck patch from the look of the originals?

Guilhem, have you thought of what logos you want to use?

Jeffrey, the choice of logos is yours. It’s your board, isn’t it? I may supply you with any “Guéthary Surfboards” logo if you want (new one, old one, very old one?) but there is no obligation. Also, if you feel like it, PierreB just made this one for me:

(After all, this board deserves the “limited edition” label… even if the “model” I had in mind was not intended to be quite the same shape -not so far, though-)

Again, your choice. No logo at all? Why not? Also, I was planning to write just a number and my initials on the stringer, on the deck side, as it was done in the past. Keeping it sober. Anyway, I regularly forget to sign my boards these days…

I suggest drawing a “Tweener” logo… What about asking our Swaylock’s brothers to work on this? I am sure many of you out there are graphic experts. The designer of the chosen logo could win something, what about a Bordeaux '96 scented bar of wax? Kidding.

I’d like to incorporated Bing’s “Tweener” as well.  Any ideas are welcome, and then we’ll go from there!

We have an extra few days anyway -Tori (my 7-year old for everyone besides Guilhem and Pierre) broke several bones in her foot and twisted her ankle while giving us a dance show in the dining room last night, just a silly slip that turned sour with a long night at the emergency room, so I’ll have to see when she’s up and about; but in any case I’ll be down to pick up the board within the next week.

Just for the hell of it, I’ll post this up. Bing ad from about 1967. A square tail version of the Pipeliner.

I can give it a try if I find a bit of spare time.

Guilhem just dropped off the shaped blank, and she’s better looking in person than in the photos.  Really an outstanding job - all the lines hold true and the transitions are very subtly done.  I keep going back into the living room to check it out… like going back to being a grom!  Thanks again, Guilhem.

Now I just have to keep it safe from my daughter’s crutches until it goes to the shop for glassing on Monday.

We’ll keep the images coming during the glassing process.

loving this thread and totally stoked to see the rest!

I found a pipeliner in a shop here: It’s a squaretail 9’6…

Please elaborate on the glassing for your board Jeffrey, curious to what your plan is!!

That’s a brand new one. Most likely shaped by Calvani.

If my math is correct the price in Euros equals about 2500 in USD. YIKES!!!

After three days of sweating at the thought that something could happen to the blank lying on the racks in my shop (you never know, it could have been struck by lightning or, much more likely, just bumped into by someone or something), I was relieved when it was finally delivered to its legitimate owner.

That was until jeffrey unpacked it right in the middle of his living-room, on the floor, and he and my wife started walking around it (and over it) like it was not there and handing each other cofee cups right over it… For a while, I feared they would hand each other piles of plates, anvils or something… Oh well, I’m not responsible anymore for what might happen…

When I left, it was miraculously still undinged…

Can’t wait to see it glassed (and above all, ridden.)

You know, if it was a blank that I shaped, I’d have to walk on eggshells… sure that I’d ding it, or drop the aforementioned coffee on it (have to admit that this was pure provocation… Guilhem didn’t say anything but you could see his jaw tighten), or trip and fall and put a knee through the deck.

So, after my studied display of nonchalence, I very carefully rewrapped it, sweating the whole time about getting it on a rail or bumping the bottom on the zipper of the bag is was resting on, and very safely stowed it in the racks in the garage 'till Monday.

This one just screams surf…

I shudder to think.

GLASS IT GLASS IT GLASS IT!!!!

In the spirit of the thread, I created a logo for you in case you haven’t gotten it glassed yet. I used the picture Bing provided of the three boards together as a basis for the drawing. Hope you like it. Allen

The garage has caused more dings to my boards than the surf!!
