black outline on airbrush work?

having trouble trying to figure out how to 'outline' my airbrush work (on the foam) with a thin black line. i heard paint pens are the way to go before you pull the tape. any thoughts?

Howzit satt, paint pens won't fill in the hles in the foam. If it is getting a gloss then wait til after it been sanded then use a paint pen. Otherwise after you do you design then use some spray acrylic over the paint and then retape or and pray with black paint, remember touse a heat gun or hair dryer when pulling the tape so it won't pull any of the paint. Aloha,Kokua

ahhh....i see. yes. i tested paint pens on some old foam and they sure don't fill all the holes in the foam. plus, they seem to bleed under the tape pretty easy. thanks for the tip about sealing the paint with clear acrylic. i laminated my test chuck of foam and the epoxy picked up the unsealed paint tinted everything yellow. big thanks for helping me avoid that on the actual board.

These things are a lot of fun. Though it takes a bit of time to really master them. Works well on the foam(eps & pu) as well as on the sanded hot coat.

atomized,

Did you ever use the earlier Buegler?  Looks like the new one is quite a bit better than the old one!

I didn’t know that there was an earlier version. The first time I saw these thing used on a surfboard was back in the late 80’s by Sam Cody, though it wasn’t a Beugler. It was this cheapo versions of the things that where sold in hobby stores. A few years later I saw Mahem using just the wheel cap of a Beugler to outline the art that he was doing on Christian Fletcher boards. This was before …Lost and posca pens. I don’t think he was even shaping then. I’ve fiddled around with the cheapo version until I was lucky to find a real Beugler at a garage sale.  I just use the wheel cap with a shortened barrel held vertically without the plunger. Now theres the website where you can order just the wheel caps.

This is the cheapo one:

They don’t work nearly as nice as a Beugler.

atomized,

That's like the one I had a long time ago.  I thought it was a Beugler.  Sometimes I could get it to work super and then at times it was a disaster.  After one disaster too many I deposited it in the trash.  Gotta try the real thing!

Yeah, the cheapos where pretty unpredictable. I had many of bad surprises with those things.
