blank choices

If I am making a 7’0" (12 nose 20 wide at center 14 tail by 2 1/2 thick) round pin and I want a relaxed gun rocker (5" in the nose and 2" in the tail), is the 7’7" R a good choice of blank? The 7’0’R and 7’3"R’s that I’ve used in the past seemed to have more like three stage rockers as opposed to the more contiuous curve I want. Obviously, I haven’t been using my own custom rockers but just picking up blanks from the closest shop.

the 70R and the 77R are closer to “staged” rocker they have minimum surface area from wide point to tail pretty crowned decks as well probably not what your looking for to yield relaxed / continuous rocker and moderate surface area and volume … the 73R has a more relaxed continuous rocker profile, a fuller crowned deck, and significant surface area throughout a good choice for your design using the 77A to shape a 70 is another sweet option imagine or visualize your 70 design in this blank beginning a little bit back from the nose of the blank will yield plenty of width and thickness from the wide point to the tail as your tail will probably be about 4 or 5 inches up from the tail of the blank some might find this an even better choice downside - the flat deck in the Rawson blanks requires a lot of work to foil and can result in your finished deck being a bit soft upside - the beauty of the rocker in the Rawson blanks is such a plus

Walker foam has a great 7’6" blank that I just used for a 7’0" it has the flowing rocker you want and the good part is that you can order the blank with the rocker you choose or you can order their 7’4" blank. http://www.ancientartsurfboards.com

check out the 7’3"P. both the patterson blanks (6’6"P) have worked well for me. at first glance they look a little rockered out but work great. seems like better quality plugs than some of the rusty’s. i used a couple 7’0R’s and find them to be a little off proportionally.

Thanks for the more experienced feedback guys.

Hey Numbnuts, To get away from a 3 stage rocker, you can order a 77R, or 70R with a Rawson rocker. Or better yet, submit your own deck or bottom curve. Sluggo

Sluggo, how do you go about submitting your own deck and/or bottom curve to, say, Clark foam? What’s the format? Will they do a single blank to a custom curve or do you have to buy in bulk to make it worth their while? Thanks for any input,

Keith, They will do a single rocker to a single blank without a problem, they encourage this. They want to be as custom as possible with their rocker and stringer program. You can submit it as a “one time” rocker, where they will not make a template, or as a “custom” rocker. You can submit bottom curves or deck curves in any format you can imagine. You just need to relay how they are to process the info back into a the rocker curve. They want you to order the rocker you need, and it doesn’t really matter to them if it is a natural rocker or a custom one time rocker. The shapers next to the factory really take advantage of this program. But a fax machine or e-mail work just fine for sending rocker data. The thing with Clark Foam is they have made the place extremely efficient for both large and small orders. They have done this with still allowing alot of custom capabilities. Call them direct if you have any questions, ask for one of the two Matt’s. 949-582-2000 Sluggo

THANKS, SLUGGO! That’s all good info, appreciate the help.

As a low volume shaper (with no resale #) Clark won’t sell to me direct but I’ve never had a problem ordering custom rocker through a retail distributor.

John- I am making an order at clark next week…You can piggyback my order again if you need to. Dave

It is typically cheaper to order through a Foam EZ, Bashams or Mitch’s anyway. They don’t care where the order is coming from. Sluggo
