Blank Repair

Have got a blank that was damaged in transit by courier. It is a straight poked puncture, about 20mm square that’s been pushed in about 3/4 of an inch. I was going to cut out the skin and fill with resin/ microsphere brew prior to shaping. I’ve been doing a bit of DIY fixits around the house and was thinking that ‘space invader’ gap filler stuff, which is PU foam I think, might do a sweet job.

Should I stick with the original idea or go the latter?

Most likly it will show no matter what.  With that in mind I would rough shape the blank before I repaired the hole.  It will be a smaller hole after shaping.  If the skin of the blank is pushed down into the hole I would remove that piece only before shaping.  I would not use the home owner “space invader” gap filler $#!t.   Fill the hole after shaping with lite weight spackle.  The stuff that feels like the can is empty when you pick it up off the store shelf.  Dab it into the hole with your finger.  The hole only Do not smear it onto the surface surrounding the hole.  Let it dry throughly.  Overnight is best.  Then screen very lightly with a sanding block and 220 screen.  Not sandpaper.  Depends on the blank brand and how brite white it is; but you may get lucky and the repair will be barley visible.  Forget the microspheres and expanding foam ideas.  that will only lead to further complications.

gorilla glue?

Hey 3 ideas:   Shape the board then repair if there is any hole left with spackle… Shape the board, then drill a 20mm hole in it with a hole saw and fill it with a round bit of foam you have from the offcuts from the tail area… Cover it up with a logo or drill it out for a ‘gopro’ plug if the repair ends up a bit unsightly…

You can probably use the heat gun trick on this. Rough shape first, then carefully apply heat and the PU foam will expand back out.

Don’t try this on EPS, though.

Thanks people, appreciated.

Looks like the general concensus is to shape the blank, mostly, prior to fixing. So will do.

It is more of a gouge than a ding Mike so heat gun probably not going to help. Have used such in the past and morks a treat.

Been using that expnder foam around my old house and thought it would have done the trick, but will stick to the suggestions. The burned hand teaches best about fire I guess.

Cheers

Let me tell you about a little trick one of my Aussie mates taught me.

Get an iron like you iron your clothes with.

Take a clear piece of copy paper.

Soak with water.

Place paper over hole.

Take the iron and lay over wet paper.

Leave until foam grows back to flush.

Steam works.

This works great,

The hard flat iron keeps the foam from over-growing.

Heat gun works too.

It just tends to burn foam and turn kinda dark.

This method works unreal.

Barry your giving away the farm.  It doesn’t work on all types of PU, but is worth trying.  You better not tell everyone what your glueing up with.  Anyhow, you rock, and keep up the great work.  Oh, just for kicks what’s the name of your Aussie mate; just because credit is so hard to come by in this, its good to give credit when its earned or due.

His name is Mike Andrews.

Now one of Burtons (I mean CI’s) top shapers.

Good guy!
