Blank Selection: Big Boy Fish

Hey guys:

Just got a special order from an older bigger guy (50+, 220lbs)

for a fish in the 7’ range and wondered if anyone has experience

with this size and blank recommendations.

I shape most of my fishes a lot smaller and use either the Bennett

or US Foam 6’2" blanks and get good boards down to 5’10".

The fins will be speeddialers and I haven’t decided to go with

bumps or without as the customer doesn’t have a preference.

Thanks in advance!!

For low rockered fish boards Ive bought longer blanks and cut them down.

I made a 6’2 from a 7’0R blank. For a 7ft fish you could even get away with using a modern longboard blank. I often sketch shape a profile right on the blank mfg drawings available free online. Lots of blank choices and drawings out there these days.

Hey Brian,

Since you are using the Bennett blanks, you can now also get KingMac.

KingMac has a 7’4" that would do very well and you can get custom rockers

pretty quick since they are glued here in San Diego. You will net 7’ and probably

get the rocker right with the stock natural rocker.

Good Luck,

George

…you can make anything you want

but in my opinion, a fish more than 6 is not a fish

I mean, there s a lot of controversy in this aspect, but

a board (the concept) needs 2 parts: the “functional design aspects” and the buoyancy in itself

those bigger fishes have a tendency to only have the buoyancy part

is more like a “more-bulk-with-an-outline-that-resemble-a-fish” board, than a flexible tail skatey fast design

Thanks George!

Since the Bennett guys are in CM near my glasser,

it is easier to get the KM blanks.

Just cut my first computer board the other day!

Old dogs can learn new tricks! LOL

Hope all is well, give a shout to Ed & crew,

tell um Stu is still hopping along, they will get it…

Hey Reverb:

Thanks for the comment but………

I shaped my first fish in 68 or 69 and……

The last three I did are:

I don’t think there is much controversy

anymore as to what makes a fish and

George & Skip have made lots more than

me and see the next post!

What size do you think this Frye board is?

yeah i’ve got one too, and it’s a thruster!

Before Clark closed I did two eggs with the 7’3" Becker blank. After Clark closed I made a hot wire set up and Copied that profile from the Clark catalog. I’ve made a couple of homemade EPS eggs with that template. I’m not sure how that translates into today’s blanks but that’s where I’d start. I think it would be a good fit with a 7’ fish.

But really…I should be asking you questions…You’ve made way more boards than me.

Hey Surfteach,

US Blanks makes a Fish specific blank for making boards up to 7’2" called the 7-3A. Check it out on our site http://www.foamez.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_13&products_id=533

We keep them in stock at all times with a 3/16 Bass stringer, Natural rocker, and Blue weight foam. If you want/need a different stringer or rocker or anything custom we can get it for you within one week.

Let us know if we can help or if you have any questions.

Good luck!

…yes I know about those S Frye fishes

for me he s filling orders… (like M C with the retro bonzers…the performance contemporary bonzer boards that he do are far high performance than the others)

no way a 7 something fish ride like a fish

an egg is far better design in that range

I see that you shape from long time and more than me

but I m not only a shaper I did and do all the steps

and surf and tested and other riders tested a lot in these years

so Im not a master but with many experience and “feedbacking” in some boards

anyway, nice outlines

I have been making BIG GUY fish for a long time. What I did was go back to what we used to do back in “the day”. I used to use the Clark 9-3 now I use a King Mac 9-3 cb. They specify it as a “machine” blank. Has lots of xtra foam. Not as thick as the Clark, bummer, but not bad. I have to throw away a foot or more of blank, always gets used for something. The other options are EPS. I designed a blank at Segway composites

If thats not thick enough try one of my “Butter” blanks

Butter on a 7-6 “Butter fish”. THICK IS GOOD!

M.F.'s Surfblanks America 7’2"F with “relaxed rocker” may also work well.

Thanks guys, will make a choice

and post the results and pics on this thread.

Ace- you take me back! I don’t want to say

which lbs we stripped back in the day to make

fish or square tail twin fins! LOL If I had those

boards unstripped today I could retire a wealthy

man…

Anyone notice a lack of Bennett Blanks. Now George is telling people to buy KM (what about Bennett which he also sells). I heard they were not making blanks anymore and the only blanks coming out of the Mex factory is KM
