Blank selection

I have a question about choosing the correct blank, would like to hear what the people who have shaped a few have to say about it.

I’m going to try to shape a 7’2” egg as my first board and was planning on using the 7’3” Becker blank figuring it is the closest to the board I envision. However, getting this blank from the local distributor here on the East Coast will require waiting about 5 weeks until they get their next shipment in. Looking at the blanks they stock, my next 2 options are the 7’10” R or the 8’3” E. I’m a little hesitant to try to use a blank a foot longer (8’3”) figuring the more complexity I add the more likely I am to screw something up.

What are the pitfalls going this route? If I use the 8’3” should I center the template to try to keep the foil, or take a little more off the front . Is this more of a “feel” for the trade-offs, rocker, foil, etc.

Of course I guess I can always just wait.

Thanks for any help and good waves to all you board builders

I’d go with the shorter (7’10") blank, you’ll save a few bucks too. Or use the 8’3" blank but make an 8’ egg out of it. What part of the blank you use will have a big effect on the rocker, particularly if you’re sawing off a foot or so! Plus if you use a blank that’s a lot bigger than the board you want, you’re more likely to overshape and end up with a soft board, since the hardest foam is on the outside, just under the crust…
