Blank selection

Other than twist, what other things do you look for in blank selection? Pros and cons.

Other than twist, what other things do you look for in blank selection? > Pros and cons. Get a Clark Catalogue and study it, then purchase the closest tolerance blank to the length/width you want, leaving min. 1" front and back. A 9’0" shape is easy, 9’1Y is the closest to size and has great natural rocker already! but if you are a lightweight ripper get the 9’5s cause it’s thin already! study the catalogue…!It’s you friend…

Other than twist, what other things do you look for in blank selection? > Pros and cons. another tip-clark isn’t the only blank co. out there.give Joe Boyle a call at Walker Foam.I feel when it comes to longboards, their foam is superior to Clark’s-it is stronger and easier to mow. Also, Joe will work with you on custom blanks, rocker, etc.

Can you elaborate on the ‘easier to mow’, is it because of a density factor? Thanks, Magoo

Matt, Does Walker Foam have a website? FYI, Walker does not have a Web site. The owner is a really nice guy, but you will have trouble getting a blank from him if you don’t have a re-sale number…he deals with wholesale only. I can’t remember his tel # right off hand, but go to Gene Cooper’s site and e-mail him to get Walker’s info. Cooper uses Walker blanks exclusively. http://www.cooperfishsurfboards.com

One advantage to buying from an out the door retailer is that you can really look the thing over before you buy it. In addition to twist, check the stringer(s) for straightness. I’ve had more than one with a “bow” in the stringer requiring some template adjustments as well as being a bugaboo when sighting down the deck. It can be hard to pick out especially when a sloppy glue up makes it hard to see the stringer.

walker foam - 310 513-1940 since they are a manufacturer, you will need a resale #.

The times I’ve used Walker foam, I was VERY pleased…and actually prefer it…Steve, Make sure you get your blanks in front of a strong light source to check for AIR BUBBLES, as well. They can be large, sometimes, and you know what THAT will do!!! I have the problem of having to mail order my blanks - being “marooned” in new york. What I’d like to know is what kind of return rate do any of you guys have - if you’re in a similar situation. In other words, how often has your foam manufacturer passed along less than seaworthy blanks to you…which you’ve had to return!!! By the way, I’m anxious to try British “Homeblown” blanks…I heard they are exceptional! Any of you tried ‘em? (Yes, they’ll probably be expensive to get over here, and yes, I should buy American {especially,NOW}. just lookin’ to try new things, eh?!). Laters, T.

Tom: I’ve been mail ordering Clark Foam blanks from CA. for the last 3 years. Normally in units of 4/box. Sometimes 2 boxes of 4 which they strap together. Always a 9’1Y" or 9’4"B in the bunch, so they are long 10’6" cartons. I’ve yet to have a problem with damage or less than 1st quality blanks. I do know there is an East Coast Clark Foam warehouse but have yet to try it. Is this where your orders originate from? I used to pay about $65.00 per box of 4 on truck shipment, as of the fuel surcharge increase last spring it is up to $90.00 per box. I believe my per blank shipping charge calculated out less when I had 2 boxes of 4 strapped together as one unit on the last order. Tom Sterne
