Blanks/ foam suppliers in Cape Town?

Hi. Aplologies for the local specific content of this post

I’m looking to shape my first board and was wondering if anyone out there knew of a foam/blank supplier in Cape Town ? Also how much they cost. If a preshaped blank is too expensive, i’d be interested in blocks of EPS/XPS.

Thanks in advance

Hi Flamer,

I've bought several blanks from Lifestyle in Muizenberg (Surfblanks SA). I haven't bought a PU blank in a little while, but when I bought prices were between about R500 - R1000, depending on the size.

I've also bought blocks of EPS from Sagex in Bellville.  About R200 - R300 for a surfboard sized block.

I believe you can get made-up XPS blanks from John at Evenflow Surfboards in Muizenberg. (I'm not sure of his contact details, but he's got a Facebook page under the name Evenflow Surfboards.)  Not sure about prices - less than equivalent PU blanks, but not sure how much less.

You can get epoxy and glass at AMT Composites or Aerontec.

Good luck, Tim

Awesome. Thanks for the info, mate.

I went along to Lifestyle today and was quoted from R650 to R750 for a blank for a fish around 6.0 in length. I’m thinking of possibly going the EPS block foam route (eeep!), but we’ll see… I’ll post any developments in the forums - no doubt i’ll need to draw on the knowledge out there.

I'm sure that lots of people here will have different opinions, but my 2c's worth is that its worth making your first board with a PU blank.  As a beginner myself (7 boards), I reckon getting the rocker right is the hardest thing.  I made my first board with a Surfblanks kneeboard blank.  I didn't get too adventurous with the rocker - basically just followed the rocker of the blank, and added a slight vee in the tail, and the board goes really well.  Cutting your rocker in from scratch adds another level of complexity, and more opportunity to screw up :-)  Do it the easy way!
