bleeding paint?

Is there a particular method for tapeing off the stringer when painting a board. I’m using 3M tape but the paint keeps bleeding onto the stringer.

Chris: Have had it happen to me too, it’s a bummer when you pull the tape and find that jagged line. The wood is actually partly to blame, there is a capillary effect since the paint is water based. Next one I do is going to be taped off the wood further to keep this from happening.I’d rather have to go back and hand tint small areas of foam than see that bleed. Seems that if you keep your paint thinning to a minimum this would help too. Anyone else have the secret to eliminate this problem? Anyone else have the secret to eliminate this problem? My best advice is to press the tape down HARD, the last thing before spraying. My worst under-bleeds occurred when I sprayed too long after pressing the tape. -Noodle

The Noodle is correct, the #1 cause is leaving the tape to long, also from my expierience & I have been away from the paints for some time. Make sure you get as much sanding dust off the board as possable (Compressed air works the best)

YA,go around the tape’s edge(just before you paint)with a tongue blade or popsicle stick,not a razor blade.Herb

Definitly press down the tape before painting. Before I tape off a stringer I lay down 1" tape over stringer and pull it, this gets rid of any foam dust left after blowing it off with air. Also don’t stretch the stringer tape as you put it on, just lay it and then press it down. This allows the tape to get down into the grain and those little nicks that are in the stringer. Works real good for me.

Works real good for me. heat up the tape with a heating gun or hair dryer. It works
