i just did some pinlines on a sanded hot coat to clean up stripes i sprayed on the foam. i used water-based paint pens for the lines. i taped off the lines with masking tape for a clean look. the problem i had was with bleeding. it looked horrible. do water based paints and pens do this, bleed into masking tape??? i used normal Scotch 3m tape.

It’s the nature of the beast. Use a good grade of tape and one trick is to smooth the tape with a ice cream stick or tongue depressor. This will eliminate most of the bleeding.

You forgot to say, press the tape down right before painting. Even ten > minutes makes a big difference. heating the tape with an hair dryer works also
if you have a few little bleeds you can use razor to scrape the paint off and even out the line. try pull out tape, I love it but you still must make sure its stuck down good.

I find that if you use a good quality tape like 3M and run a razor blade over it before you spray you shouldn’t have any problems. Also I thicken the paint slightly before spraying.Make sure you sand the area where your pinline will go to 240 or 320 to avoid big scratches for the paint to run into.Good luck…
what specific tape do you guys use for best results?
what specific tape do you guys use for best results? …I use the cheapest a** tape on the market, like Tesco or 3M 20/20,as long as I’m not taping over other painted surfaces. Now the pros like Kokua would tell you absolutely not to use them ,and I agree with them.Over time, trial, and errors,I have learned to control the cheapest tapes, even spray glue and paper. So it is possible.I haven’t gotten even as much as one single bleed in the last several boards. The problem with the cheap tapes is they separate easily when exposed to water. …Stick with the higher quality 3M AUTOMOTIVE TAPES for your painting needs.Herb
any good tips if taping over a painted surface?
I use plastic tape from M3 for taping the stringer. I heat it up, just until before it schrinks. The glue is warm and the plastic is soft. When you press the tape with your fingers it fils litle holes where the paint normaly bleeds. Darren, are you the darren from surfworks, UK?? bad englisch i now sorry
Geert, I am not the darren from surfworks UK. I run Evolve Longboards on the Gold Coast Australia.
I you are taping over the paint on the foam you will need to put down a coat of clear acrylic before you tape so that you don’t lift up the base colour.
do you use spray cans, or through a spray gun? for the clear acrylic coat
any good tips if taping over a painted surface? When I do double tape offs I always spray the lighter color first, then set it with clear acrylic(before you pull the tape). Then I do second tape off,now if any paint lifts when you pull the second tape off it’s not as noticeable with the lighter color. Not sure if I worded this right, but hope you get the idea.
