Hi, How do you put in the railbands when you do a blended rail(I don’t know if this is the right terminology), say a soft round rail up front to something with a tuck edge through the mid section to a hard, down rail near the tail? Do you still put in all the rail bands the full length of the board or do you work sections of the rail at the time? Curve the railbands or just do all the changes with the depth adjustment? regards, Håvard
i shape the bottom rails first. put a mark where you want the hard edge to start (usually just in front of the fins) and a mark where you want the rails to become completely soft(usually about where your front foot is). Run the planer/surform/sandpaper along the whole rail starting just above the sharp edge mark. Dont hit the edge behind your sharp edge mark at all. Use a progressive cut by opening up the planer depth or by using more pressure if you are doing it by hand. Use the soft rail mark to gauge the flow of your cut. Dont have an abrupt ending at your sharp edge mark - make sure it blends slowly from round to sharp. The marks are just guidlines. Then cut the top rail until meshes with the bottom rail and blend them with a screen.
