Hey All,
Love what I’m seein. Keep it coming.
I shaped a 9’6 x 22 squaretail longboard a little over a year ago. Soon as I can figure out where the pics are I’ll post them or take new ones. This was my 2nd board.
My question is this - I’m planning to semi duplicate the board for my wife (5’3 3/4" - 142 lbs) - 9’6 again(unsure of the tail shape I want to go with); but, this time I’m looking to make a noserider. With a noserider do I need to make the nose wider (I know I’ll have to spoon out the nose)? How do you determine the depth of the concave? I’m using a donald takayama tbird as inspiration. Thanks
JD
Here’s a little fish I knocked out a couple of years ago from a Blending Curves template.
That’s a really nice, clean, classic outline. And the execution thereof too of course.
I found the pics finally. Let me know if anybody has any answers to my earlier questions. I’m hoping to crack into the blank this next weekend.
Thanks all
JD
Hey JD nice looking board, and big! I’m no noserider expert, but I think your wife could probably noseride that board with no problem, at 142 lbs.! The only change I would make is to round the nose. You sure she wants a 9-6? I’m guessing she could easily noseride a smaller longboard, maybe somewhere between 8’ to 8’ 6", and have less board to manage in the lineup.
9’2" Gun. (the one on the left) Snapped it on my second surf. Fixed it. I’ve had a few sessions since and it still goes fine.
I got caught inside at this spot.
Hey Huck,
Thanks for the tips! I definitely will want to round out the nose more. Yeah, I hear you on the size issue. That thing is a monster, especially with that one bc it’s got Volan on it. But she rode it and fell in love with it so she requested one with similar dims. So what I’m hearing you say (can you tell I’m a therapist haha) is you don’t have to scoop out the nose to be able to noseride, it’s more a matter of the weight of the rider vs the size of the board?
JD
Judging from those boards, you spend a lot of time in places with serious surf!
Well, yes, the part about the “scooped” concave being optional. I’m no longboard noserider expert, was hoping some of the more knowledgeable posters might join in, but its easy to miss your question in this thread. Might start a new thread with title like “longboard noserider design questions” or the like. Anyway, the scoop is optional, some guys like it, but a board can be a good noserider without a scooped concave. There are other design factors, you have round rails in the tail, which is good for a noserider, keeps the tail engaged in the wave face while the rider is trimming on the nose. Size of board and weight of rider are factors too, and she is small so that works to her advantage. Anyway, if nothing else try searching the archives, I’m sure its been discussed before and you’ll probably find some useful information. In the long run, I think she’d be happier with a board no larger than 9’, but thats just me, sounds like she has her mind made up.
Hey Huck,
Thanks again for all the help. I’m definitely going to be combing the halls of swaylocks looking for info. I’ll keep the size, the rails, all that in mind. Really appreciate you’re willingness to share from your wisdom and experience. Keep sharin the stoke!

This is a GREAT THREAD…
Digging the revival of this thread!
I may as well just let you all know that i have all the rocker templates ready to throw onto the site. I just need the free time to do so (just moved houses and our littlest one is taking up most of my free time). Life…go figure.
That first one is an Egg from BC I did for a buddy - second one is one of their longboard templates… somehow I didn’t grab a photo of the bottom once the fins were in… I also forgot to sign the damn thing.
Took this out for the first time today…I can’t believe it worked! First board for me and I did everything. The glassing, especially the hot coat, absolutely kicked me ass. Not going to say how many times I had to re-do that step, and then I rushed through sanding…also not a good idea. By the end I was pretty burned out but surfing it today got me stoked again! Fish A for the wife…
5’8" x 23" x 2 3/4" thick. Board number lucky 13. Took to a secret spot with my buddy and let him burrow it and never saw it again, but I’m stoked he likes it and I owed him one. He wants another one so I’m in luck
Retro C 5’6 x 19 1/2 x 2 blending curves template. My first ever shape, glass job not so great if you look close but still surfs pretty well.
This is my 2nd board ever. Used an old longboard as the blank, same Retro C Blending Curves template but I mixed and matched the tail with one of the Alt templates to give it more of a pintail. Also experimented with a bit of resin tinting on this one which came out pretty cool plus a new logo which I printed out on clear tracing paper with a standard inkjet printer. Snapped the fin out on my backside on my second surf on this board. It has a seriously low rocker from it being an ex longboard, flies down the line though. Busy working on a chambered wooden surfboard at the moment using a shortboard template from blending curves with a daimond tail. Will post some pics when that’s done.
