I haven’t contributed much here, but I have benefited greatly from all of your collective wisdom. I’ve been reading/printing out the threads on this forum for about a year now and finally decided to take the plunge.
I made a template from my favorite 6’2" and was able to do a decent job of replicating the original. All done with hand tools, as my power plane skills leave much to be desired. I’ll be glassing this sucker on Sunday and will post pics and final dims on it when I’m done.
Nowhere near perfect, but I’m stoked beyond belief.
And here is my garage/shaping room…

Looks good…butt…now your hooked : ) …have fun with the new board…

Nicely done!
I have a question about your shaping room. How well do the hanging tarps work in keeping the foam dust in a central location? I want to ‘box off’ one section of my garage in a similar fashion.
Thanks!
It works quite well as long as you do it right. I learned through several mistakes. You have to make the tarps overlap by a foot or so to make sure that there isn’t open space for dust to escape through. Also, when using the power planer I put a clear tarp over the top so that the dust doesn’t fly out that way. I plan to connect my shop vac as a permenant solution to that problem. Also, make sure the tarp on the floor comes up to overlap the hanging tarps so dust doesn’t sneak out the bottom.
In all this whole hanging tarp set up cost about $25. I used shower curtain o-rings that I found at a $1 store. PVC pipe is cheap, but make sure you get it thick enough so it doesn’t bend down due to weight of tarps. Tarps were $3 at a local hardware store. Used rope to hang it from all 4 corners to the ceiling.
By the way, I got the idea when I saw a picture that Dronai had posted on this forum. I just took it a step further. I also figured the blue tarps could be an alternative to painting the walls blue.
Here’s the pic that Dronai posted in January '05…

TinyUniverse-
Great idea and thanks for explaining. I’ll probably do the same thing and I’m not even using power tools [yet]. But air swirls around in my garage when the wind is blowing so I think the hanging tarps will minimize the spread of the foam dust.

One step closer. Only the hotcoat left…
I learned that I’m a big fan of UV catalyst.
I’ll post final pics when I’m done.
