Board #0005 Finished - Pics

As you can see in one of the photos there is no swell to test it out, but it needs to cure a few more days anyway. The old digital camera died during shaping so I didn’t get too many progress photos, except putting on the paint. Krylon H2O in a can! It is 6’0", wide and fat. I couldn’t find any posts with details on tail config or fin placements so I had to wing it. Sorry for the bad pun.

Nice one. Im into the tape job art on the deck.

Where did you get the surfrider foundation laminate? Make it yourself?

I love the deck art really nice random but clean and not to random nice board

Thanks skiny - like all great art, it was derivative! Based on some boards I saw at Surfride O-side.

ACheateaux - the Surfrider logo lams can be purchased at the national website for $3.00.

what do u use to sign your boards (i tried a sharp pencil and it just tore foam out and ive tryed sharpes and there just to thick)

Nice board Ted. I like the deck art too.

Have a couple of questions if you don’t mind.

Where did you get those fins? I did a quad in the fall for a friend, I ended up using the Future’s twin fins in front and two of the trailer fins in the back. Those look like canards, but also like they are made of plastic.

I am planning on making a double winged quad for myself over the winter. I have designed one up with the APS3000 app. I am not exactly sure on the numbers. I have the rear wings(bumps more than wings) at 6" and the front ones at 12", each wing goes in about 1" from the rail in front of it, so it goes from a tail width of 16" at 12" up, in 1" down to 6" up from tail and in another 1". I figure on putting the fins at 5 1/2" and 11 1/2" respectively. Hope this makes sense.

What are the measurements that you used for yours?

And I know, someone will say: ‘just build it and see’ … well that’s what I was gonna do anyway, but I am curious as to what you used. Can’t find much on wing measurements in the archives.

Anyway, thanks for any help, and again, nice board.

Oh, skiny. For marking on the foam I found the best is artist sketching pencils. Go to an art store and look for a number 7 or 8 pencil. Really soft graphite, marks well and won’t tear up if you are gentle.

Hey Ted:

Great board! I think on Fri/Sat. we should get some surf but I don’t know if there will be enough push for a quad. I was recently debating between a wide base fin fish and a quad fish and did a search for fin placement and found a lot of info. To see what others are doing, do a search using “speed dialer” or “quad template” and don’t forget the quotes. Sort by date for the latest. A search for

“Mandala quad” should also give up some good info.

Please let us know how it works and post dimentions. I really like the bump tail, you did a great job!

I believe that you can get the Surfrider lams from Surfrider.

Thanks for all the compliments! I’ll try to field some of the questions. The pencils, yes you need to go to an art store to get really soft lead. But I still have a problem getting it dark without going deep into the foam. Maybe I need to keep looking at other pencils.

The fins are the Futures quad set. They’re not canards (pretty sure that is the little fin in front, like a Twinzer) and seem to be based on the Pavel Speed Dialers. The glasser uses Futures a lot and it was a good deal - $30 for four boxes and four fins. They are composites (plastic). Go to Futures web site and you can get specifics on them.

I don’t have exact tail dimensions and fin placements handy at the moment but I can put them up later. But I am pretty close to what Johan1 is planning. Now that I’m done I wish I had not gone so far into the rail for each wing, and made the transition bumps less sharp. Subsequent looks at Pavel and Mandala quad pics revealed them to be a more subtle flow.

One mistake I made was to decide on my wing placements and then considered fin placement after I’d already cut in the wings. Then I realized I should probably have decided how far up the tail to put the forward fins, and tie the wings into that. Oh well, I went to the surf shop and looked at several boards and took some rough fin placement measurements and I decided I was close enough for a first try. I didn’t have luck finding posts with exact measurements, but lots of pics. If someone can give a link to such posts I would love it.

your board looks awesome mate. happy surfing.

that board looks awsome Ted! very inspiring that it is your #5.

i’m very interested in how you painted it. what kind of foam and resin?

you said it still needs to cure. does that mean epoxy?

again, the board looks sweet. it just screams to be surfed!

Thanks ChrisP. The board is PU/PE. I don’t know squat about how long to let it “cure” before surfing, I’ve just read stuff here about people saying they waited a week or so before using their just glassed boards. I picked it up a day or two after the glassers finished it - I’m not set up to glass at home. The paint is a spray can of Krylon H2O, a water based acrylic. I’ve used it before. I just taped off some areas with different width tape, then removed that after the first spray, then put in some thinner tapes inside the previously masked areas and sprayed it again. It’s a design I saw on some pro boards at a shop and I altered it a bit for mine. Hoping for some waves tomorrow, it’s all waxed up.

Hey Ted,

you’re not an experienced photog by any chance? your presentation is great!

Board looks really fun, now we just need waves to test all our latest!!!

George

Hi Ted ,

Love the art work.

Some times I copy other’s , sometimes other’s copy me…

Great work!

Ray

Hey PlusOne, experienced photog yes, professional no! It seemed like once people started commenting on the quality of lawns, Mandala upped the ante by taking his new boards to the beach. Then I saw someone comment on his footprints so I had to consider that…
