Board #5

Here is the 5th board I have shaped.
This one is :
6’x22"x2 1/8"
Set up for quad fin system.
Has a slight single cancave into a deep double.
Hope you guys like it.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Can add more pics if needed.

Thank you for your time.

Looks good! What kind of foam did you use? I’ve done only 7 boards, all eps. The next one I will try a PU blank. I think it might be easier to do concaves. What do you plan on for the glassing and are you installing fin boxes or glass ons? Keep at it!

Hey CHarvey, I noticed in another post that you’re outta North PB like I am. Now I’m no pro but I’d be down to meet up sometime and check out the board you have there. I’ve got some that I’m working on too. PM me if you’re interested. Is that the Windansea shop in Mission Beach? From the pics the board looks good, a profile shot would be great though. Any reason going 2.1/8" thick?

-Tim

Yes sir, North PB at Diamond St. I’ll send you a PM later today.

So far I have shaped all 5 boards down and Wind n Sea in Mission.

Thank you for the compliments.

Will add a profile shot tonight.

I said 2 1/8" thick cause my calipers suck and they might be as accurate as the calibrated eye, so bassically I guessed. It’s probablly thicker but… lol

The Foam I used was HST Foam from Australia. Only draw back to the foam was that they are already starting off pretty thin so you really need to watch how much you take off while skinning the blank. But the foam shaped very nicely and it was a consistant density all the way through. Sanded to a very nice finish as well.

Glassing will be 6x4 on top and a 6 on the bottom with futures boxes might go with a burgandy resin tint, not sure yet.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Any thing so far that you think I could have done better or that you would have done different?

Hi CH,

Tidy effort but the outline looks a bit bumpy. Can you print an outline from Aku Shaper etc? If you can, send me a PM with some dims and I will see if I can draw you a smoother outline.

A little bumpy yes. Didn’t help that I used the first template I ever made to make this board to. It was a little rough. When surring up the perrimeter of the board I got a little to fixated on the line and not the shape.

Thank you for your offer I will get a file to you as soon as my job offers me a free minute.

At least this time the top of the rails were blended in pretty good for me.

Thanks again brother man

Here is the profile shot:

Having looked at it a bit more I can already see certain parts of the board (could just be asthetics) that I am not sure if I like.

Will hold my final decision for after the ride report though.

I completely forgot to mention that this board will be for the fish fry in Oceanside at the end of this month.

Made this one and then finished a pre-shape 6’0" diamond tail single fin.

Made to share the stoke.

Looks like a nice flexy , bladey tail ,bet it’ll slice the water like switchblade !

I wish I could ride boards like that without sinkin up to my thighs.

Rode the board for the first time today.

The waves weren’t all that great but I figured why not.

First impression when paddling the board is how differnt it was to lay on while paddling. (compared to my other fish)

Paddles well, but chop makes it a little interesting.

Catches waves pretty easily. Found it very loose once I am up. Will probably get a few different sets of fins to experiment with.

That’s it for now. Hope some better waves come in for more testing.

Some shops around me have fins available for “test drives.” You borrow them for a session, and trade them in for the next. That’s the ideal way to experiment.

That was my next step.

I was going to try the fins off of my magik fish and head to the local surf shop and see if they would let me borrow some.

Thanks for the info.
