Board for Fiji

I’m heading to Namotu in July and I’m wondering if anyone here has been, and if so, what boards you’d recommend to take. I’m thinking of taking my standard shortboard, a fish and maybe a gun or semi-gun. Normal short board for me is 6’2. Any info would be great! Thanks Josh

Hey Josh. Lucky man! Fiji is nice, clearest water I’ve ever seen, but bring a vest cause it’s not as hot as Indo. Anyway to the boards; Fish (5’6 - 6’), short board (6’-6’4), semi gun (6’10-7’2). That’s what I would bring. Namotu (left) and Wilkes (righthander across the channel) both hold quite big, but they’re not heavy. Swimming Pools (righthander on the other side of Namotu) is usually a smallish, down the line hot dog wave and would be lovely on a ‘traditional’ fish. Desperations is a peak further to the northeast. It’s usually surfed when everywhere else is flat, but it’s great when big (but a complete @%$$ to get back out). You could surf anything from your smallest to your biggest board here. Cloudbreak is insane, but you’re only allowed on on Saturdays (tranfer day @ Tavi). You will be happy you brought a big board if you get it at size. The little known left off Momi Bay lighthouse is the heaviest wave I saw there and worth chasing on a big swell. VERY hollow and quite shallow. Hope this helps Cheers Maz

Doh! It’s still early and I haven’t quite gotten my bearings yet. Desperations is to the northWEST of Namotu. Good luck Maz

Cool, you just validated my choices. I just shaped a traditional fish (my first shape), so I wanted to bring that, a 6’2 shortboard, and a 7’6 gun-type board. Thanks again for the info.
