I just got into making boards and recently finished my first fish (came out better than expected).
Anyway, surfing crappy conditions the other day got me thinking about my next project. What do you guys think would be a good board design for handling choppy/windy, smaller-period, shifty slop in the 1-4 foot range?
I guess many would say, “Why bother even surfing that day” but I have to take what I can get when the schedule permits. I just like getting any exercise in the mornings too.
I’m mostly a longboarder, but I get a vibe like a shorter board would be better. Fits better between close-together waves and doesn’t catch as much wind. Maybe simple/flat bottom contours too?
Something like a bear wombat in the shorter lenght that match your weight, original is 6’4x21”1/4. Flattish, compact with volume help on those conditions (méditerranée?). For bottom light belly to vee can be confortable on textured water.
I’m an old surfer but not very knowledgeable on board design….however…I surf conditions like you describe all the time and my favorite board when it’s pretty bad is a Bruce Fowler V Machine. I have a 7’6” and a 6’10”.
They both work well for me in chop and the 6’10” is easy to manage when it’s a little bigger and short period waves.
Not sure if a v bottom is generally considered good for such conditions but works for me😀
