I Have been on a fish kick lately. I have a 6’2 quad fish, and a 6’4 modern fish that work in anything waist high and up as long as it has a little push. The only gap in my quiver is a board for really weak waves, like knee to thigh high. My question is this: Is there a type of board 7’2 or under in height that can move in the mush similar to a 9’0 longboard? I could invest in a longboard, but would have storage issues at home & work. I’m a bigger guy weighing 210 and surf San Diego’s beachbreaks & reefs. Would maybe a thicker quad egg do the trick? Am I dreaming? I would love to here your thoughts! Thank you.
somewhere on here ACE posted a thread-with pics- about such a board. i don’t recall thread’s title… looks like it worked great…
I’m 6’-6" and 210. This board works unreal in little surf. Rides like a skateboard. Keep the thickness all the way to the rail. 3/8" concave to the front of the fins and a 1/8" V thru the tail.
Not too bad for an old guy!
have you considered a liddle?
Mark Markmiller? Did you go to Rolling Hills High?
What about a lowered rocker egg in the 6’9" - 7’0" range?
Around 15.5" tail 21.5 x 16" nose 3" with the volume kept to the rail?

I think that’s gonna be tough. What works for one guy, might not work for another. You’re talking about knee high surf. I’d get a longboard and hang it on the wall or ceiling for storage.
I had a board that did actually work in knee high waves: 6’4 retro fish. 16x23x16x3 Flat to heavy vee bottom, twin single foiled keels, toed in to an inch off nose (I think), canted at 4 degrees. The pins were like 10 inches apart, with about a 5 inch deep crack. Slightly domed deck, rails were 50/50 in the nose, soft tucked edge in the middle, no tuck and hard in the tail. In weak, slow, or small waves you could push it around with your legs, kind of like a longboard. But at speed, in big or fast waves, it was very hard to turn due to the width, but it was FAST. But the bottom line was, it could literally catch anything… a lot of fun in the summer on days that were not considered ridable. So wide in the tail you had to move your back foot and step on the rail to turn the think.
I rode it for years, then sold it this summer to a guy who fell in love with it. Threw me through a loop, actually. I always saw it as the “ugly girl at the dance.”
Thank you everyone!!! Maybe a BIGGG fish, a 7’0 egg as basswave described, a Liddle, or just giving in and giving in to the fact that the only board that can compete with a longboard is indeed a longboard. Hmmm I’ve got some thinking to do.
Don’t need the added length, especially if by chance the waves get hollow or steep.
Just add width and thickness.
24" wide is just fine, as is a 17" tail, or slightly wider.
I’m 145lbs., and rode some short twin fins 23" wide and 5’6" long, and easily turn it in head high (5’) fast moving slow peeling surf.
Everyone who thinks wide boards are hard to turn just don’t bank the board with any real pressure. Just gotta lean on it a bit, similar to what you do with DOH size waves…lean in hard !
Don’t see any reason for thickness under 3" either, as duckdiving is NOT a question in underhead high surf, and thickness adds to wave catching and longer sessions.
As for thickness under the back foot, go well up around 2.5", as you’re not moving fast on small waves, and the added float just gets you going in slower sections.
Dedicated SMALL WAVE BOARD. Not for head high or bigger …
Great stuff leeDD! 24 inches wide?!! Yes, I’m trying it. It’s going to be a fun experiment. what about length? Maybe 6’2?
