Board for my bro's 30th - help me decide

So it’s my older brothers 30th bday coming up in a couple of months and I want to make him a board for a surprise present.
Being a present I’d like to make him a classic board that would be a wall hanger as well as a rider, however im not sure he’d appreciate a single fin or twinny as much as myself. He generally rides shortboards and hp fishes and doesn’t like keels. So that said I have thought of the following:

  1. a hp fish along the lines of a Zamora or toko that would probly get used a fair bit and is still a pretty cool board. Could make it with Volan cloth for a twist
  2. a step up/ indo semi gun . He’s planning on spending a bit of time in indo in the coming years so this could be a good one. What better present than something to get barreled on right?
  3. just make him a regular board to use and abuse. He’d appreciate it, but something with s bit more sentiment would be nice.
  4. make a classic that won’t get ridden much but has a bit of soul to it.

What would you guys want for a significant bday if you were getting a board shaped by your brother?

Once I’ve decided what to make, I might turn this into a build thread and you guys can help me along the way!

you know him better than most, does he need a new every day board atm ? Does any of his current quiver need replacing or updating ?  Does he have Indo boards for his upcomin trip ? once you have these answered it might be bit clearer....what would get him the most stoked on his Bday ???

Let’s just say his usual idea of upgrading boards is to flog one of mine and hope I don’t notice! He has plenty of standard shortboards so I think I’ll rule that out. Am really leaning towards the mod/ hp fish style shape at this stage but doing it in Volan and tinted resin for a bit of a classic twist.

shape sounds cool, just careful you dont negate the HP part with heavy volan cloth....

been thinking about the style and shape the last few days. so far i am leaning towards around 5'7" x 19.5" x 2.5", which should give me around 27-30 litres of volume, depending on how much foam is rolled off the deck & rails (should be plenty to float his 70-75kgs). Plan is to have the wide point pushed forward around 2-3 inches and a pretty straight outline though the back half into a wide tail. thinking close to 9-10" at the tips of the tail, do you think this will be too wide at the tail tips? Not sure what exact tail shape shape yet, that will be decided once i decide on the fin setup. i am leaning towards twinny with a small stabilizer at this stage, however am wary that my bro likes a fair bit of hold and pivot in his boards, so a thruster or quad might be better suited to him.

I've seen a couple of your fat bats and mod fish board pridmore, whats the widest tail you have run on them successfully?

Sounds to me like the HP fish is winning out at this point. I like the volan.

As soon as you get it going, post some pics please.
