Board Ideas for Indo??

Hello All, I’ve got a question that I’m embarrassed to ask, but figured why the hell not. I’m going to Indonesia for three months and am looking for a one board quiver. I will be buying the board somewhere in Bali then venturing off. Any ideas??

I am 5’9, 145lbs, am a real strong paddler (thanks to the catalina classic), and i should be honest about this–have no experience surfing jacking reef breaks.

I normally ride a home shaped 5’11 lost rocket inspired (wide tail, low rocker) or a homemade 5’6 retro fish for anything under head high. I step up to a 6’0 Merrick for anything hollow and bigger (and when its really pumping a 7’6 semigun).

I’m from the South Bay and consider myself a good beach/point break surfer, comfortable in any size I’ve been thrown into so far, but I’m sure i’m going to loose a bit of skin during the learning curve in Indo. I want to charge but can only buy 1 board.

I need something that I’ll be able to get on rail in the head high and under range, but something that will paddle and get me over the ledge on the bigger days. I have one goal on this trip, get barreled as much as possible, so i figure I’ll need something with a lot of rocker, and maybe a bit wider for paddling? maybe a rounded pintail? I was thinking 6’1 or 6’2. Any bigger and I’ll have trouble turning it as much as I’d like on the smaller days. Is that too short for the 8 to 10 foot days? I only ask because I know I can ride a board that size at home in big surf but don’t know what Indian Ocean swells over coral reef will call for.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone know of any shops with good boards for sale (preferably used…i’m a cheap skate)? Thanks for the help!

Spencer

Contact Surfding who posts here - he is a shaper, builds for pro's, and travels to Indo.  And his prices are very reasonable IIRC.

or check out www.moresurfboards.com   and look at Quadfathers, I know you wanna get a sled in Indo but something like this works well, just my opinion, I shape and if I was going and only could take one board , firstly I would freak out coz I cant even drive to my local with at least 2 or 3 boards, but I would take a Quadfather.....good luck with it...

performance quad . glassed to last , he has a shop in bali too.

or get a coil

thanks for the tips. the next board i make is definitely going to be a quad, but unfortunately i won’t get around to it before the trip (less than two weeks!!!). Those Diverse look pretty sweet and that Quadfather…damn. I’ll be traveling through Southeast Asia after Indo so I’ve gotta make my money last and don’t want to spend a ton on a board I’ll have to part with anyway. i’m thinking a used quad as close to 6’2 as I can get. Maybe i’ll be able to find a used Diverse in Bali… Thanks for pushing the quad idea. I’ve never owned one and didn’t know how they go in barrels so thanks for getting me on the bandwagon, its about time! Cheers,

Spencer
