Board in Progress..Pics

Hey guys,

This is my first board that I am shaping. I am not done shaping it yet but this is what i have done so far. I need to do rails, fix tail, and nose. But for the most part its coming along pretty good I guess. It is 5foot by 20inches and 2inches thick.

Here is another one.

What do you guys think?

I am also doing this in my dorm room at college and have limited sanding tools.

Also I had a question, I am about to order the supplies for glassing.

This is what i was going to get:

General Purpose Laminating Resin gallon $26.93

MEKP (Hi Point 90) 2 oz. $3.59

Style #1522, 4oz. X 27" Fiberglass Cloth 6 yards $24.66

4" Spreader each $0.66

Do I need anything else?

I think the prices seem pretty good.

Any tips or comments would be great. Thanks.

pics don’t work for me.

But i suggest shaping / glassing in your basement of your dorm. Not your room. Bring it back to your room when you are not working on and set aside most of your sat/sunday so you can spend time glassing it and make sure no one is screwing with it. I thougth of doing the same when i was in school but just decided to just do it at my parents house.

Pics dont work for me either. I’m running Mac OS X. Try making them a universal format.

  1. you need to upload the pictures to the web and link to them there…other people can’t see them if they’re linked to your hard drive.

  2. i agree with the basement dorm…foamdust gets everywhere, and you’d rather not be suckin’ it up while you’re trying to sleep.

  3. glass with epoxy. if glassing with poly, you’d need to do it outside, as you couldn’t possibly get adequate ventilation in your dorm (whether in your room or your basement). the smell from the MEKP will meander through the whole building. they’ll evacuate, and call the fire department to see what’s causing the funk. then, they’ll find you there…squeegee in hand. a short time later, you’ll be expelled. if, however, you do glass outside with poly, this will present a whole new mix of problems – temperature, humidity, contaminants in the air, bugs and bird poo…the list goes on. then there’s the issue of the resin kicking off too fast. if ever i glass with poly, i use UV cure – a little tough to do that outside, though. epoxy is the answer for you – no funky odor, long pot life, easy to work with. i recommend Resin Research.

Good Luck!

on a side note, what school are you at? i did my undergrad at Florida State, and they had a woodshop that students could use. string a tarp up from the ceiling to keep the dust from other people’s projects out, and it was a pretty good workspace. the school didn’t really publicize the facility, though…i had to go out of my way to find it, and to gain access. your school might have something like that, too.

Thanks for the heads up about the glassing. I was going to do it in my room, i did not know it smells that bad. But I do have to windows and 2 fans blowing where i am working.

I am an undergrad at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD. I live in Jersey though

the funk will still make its way through your floor (at a minimum). and i didn’t see a respirator on your list of supplies?! glass jobs don’t go so good when you lose consciousness half way through. if you kill off all your brain cells with mekp, then you won’t have any left for the alcohol. mmmm…COLLEGE!

dude…your at college…wait for a nice day…when the girls come out dressed in their little outfits and shape outside…c’mon…theyll love you…plus your roommate will love you too…i know man…i purposely went to school for 5 years.

can someone back me up on this? chicks love surfers and artists…youre both!

Can you glass PU blanks w/ Epoxy Resin? How would it bond?

sure you can…works great. i’ve been using RR epoxy over PU foam for almost 3 years now.

Ha you guys are right… alotta people come in and out of room checking the board out so far, girls love it…

But i do have a mask, lil blue one i think its a POS lol and i’ll probably buy one from Home Depot that circulates the air…

So consensus is not to glass inside =(

But if i have to do it outside, how should i do it. What would your setup be and what precautions should I take.

How would it dry also, I would have to leave it out there?

using RR epoxy i glassed inside…very little if any odor…i would have liked to do it outside, but the humidity here in PA is something i didnt want to battle…i cranked the heat to 77 F while i was in preparation…as soon as i was ready to start glassing i turned it down to 60 F…using 2 to 1 resin to hardener mine turned out well…had plenty of time to work and no horror stories about the epoxy remaining tacky or outgassing (sealed with DEP spackle)

someone may have some more info or tell you not to do it this way, but it worked for me

Hey,

What is PU Foam… and what does it mean you “sealed it with DEP spackle”? i don’t understand, can you explain your glassing process please.

Also i just started the nose rocker for my baord. Do you guys shave a little at a time moving up the board then shave more? I am taping off different areas of the nose to get different depths, then at the end ill smooth them together. Is this a good idea?

post your pics man!

go to www.tinypic.com and upload each image there, then just paste the image link in the same way you tried to before from your hard drive.

well in all likelyhood you have either a PU blank or an EPS blank…if you post the brand im sure someone on here can tell you what you have if youre not sure.

as far as glassing method…there are tons of resources on here for that (some good pics too)…just do a search…pick up some things that look like youd be most comfortable with and go for it…also google surfersteve…he has an online book with some really good stuff.

skeno buddy,

you need to spend some time in the archives.

see up there at the top right corner of the screen

where it says “search”? try typing “seal”, “eps”, “epoxy”,

“polyurethane”, etc.

LOTS of info in the archives.

should be able to answer all your current questions and give

you enough to think about so that you come out with many more.

and if you vote for pedro, all your wildest dreams will come true.

also…if you want to watch someone glass a board get on youtube…there are a couple good videos of glassing and shaping

theres a guy on there that lams with a brush…i would not use this technique…just squeegee it

Hey guys,

Heres an update, I am finished with my board unless you see anything wrong.

Here are the pics…hope they work.

This is a pic of the concave deck. You can not really tell because light is real bad and so is camera.

This is a pic of the nose rocker.

This is a pic of the rails. Again can not really see it that well.

This is a pic of the scale of the board next to my sexy sharpeye

Its 4’10’’ x 18’’ x 2’', trying to make a waveskate haha

This a pic from tail to nose.

…and another

You think it is ready for glassing?

any comments? tips? critiques?

…all are welcome

Thanks

Hey Skeno,You are killing me man…you don’t have a roommate you must be way bigger than him…what a mess…good luck dude…

I sympathize with your situation. I am currently a student, the lack of space for projects can get quite tiresome mostly on the roommate. I shaped and glassed a board in a dorm like apartment building with no complaints (I get more complaints when I distill). I had a lot of fans going and I most certainly didn’t use resin. Epoxy was doable. I don’t know what your college is like but mine, Alfred University, has a bunch of kilns and big fume hoods. I recently did a project using resin under one of those (with a mask) but I didn’t get any complaints from anyone else in the building.

yo my dorm room is huge… that space is 1/4th of my living room… its a 3 bedroom 6roomate 2bath… its not a big deal my roommates love it… my other roommate always spray paints… i usually have a space clothed off with 2 fans blowing, same for spray paint…

but yea it looks alot better in person, i think i am going to to use epoxy.

peace ya
