board is riddled with bottom pressure dents, will it affect performance?

Hi,

I want a lost rocket and the local surf shop has one for a good price, but the bottom is riddled with pressure dents. I’m wondering if this will affect wave catching of the board and/or the ride?

The short answer is yes, obviously the contour of the bottom affects the performance of a water craft. Could you still catch waves, and have fun on it? Probably. But the condition tells you it’s not long for this world, it’s a disposable board that is over the hill.

If the price is good for a few months of surfing, might be a good deal.

thats why I make my own, I can build them to last. A good shaper could do the same for you.

Thanks I’ve thought about getting one shaped, but still trying to figure out what would work for me. If I got this board it would definitely be like using it as a demo for a few months

Well, there you go.  Figuring out what works best for you is all part of the process.  Its constantly changing, as your skill, health, age, circumstances, etc. change.

You can usually get a good custom for similar price to a new mass-production board, the challenge is to find a good shaper.

Making your own is pretty doggone fun too, if you have the space and the motivation to learn.

A well used board will have dents on the deck. Dents on the bottom ? Lots of dents on the bottom? Why would a surfboard have dents on the bottom?

Yes,surfing at Trestles or Sunset Cliffs you might hit a rock now and then…lots of dents on the bottom…

…kook waxing the board on the pavement or hard sand with rocks under…

I decided I don’t want this used board. There really are way too many, even for 180$. Huck I’m looking at used because I don’t really have 500 for a new one. But once I’ve dialed it in, I’ll get one shaped

Craigslist

There are boards made with dents divots etc that some swear are better than smooth bottoms. You can get some dents to pop back up with a hair dryer. I have seen lots of guys rippen on old dented brown boards.

I pressure dinged the bottom of a Velzy with my skull, and my skull with the bottom of said Velzy… skull ding affected ride short term not board ride at all that I could ever tell
