Board / mat / kneeboard / bodyboard/ etc poll!

Alright. Seems that everyone has their own opinions on what they ride, and why they ride it. I’d like to hear what everyone has to say on their personal quiver, and what they would change/ not change about it. As for myself, I prefer my twin fin fish above all. 5’8" x 21 x 2 5/8". it simply suits the way I surf, as far as I can tell. from the first waves i rode on it, i was hooked. plus, it gives me an excuse to surf without a leash of course, i have a 6’6 roundpin for days where duckdiving is all but useless on the fish ( i weigh 160, so its quite a pain to duck it if its over head high), and it works decently. only had it out about 3 or 4 times, but it’s still fun. longboarding is great in my opinion. versatility is a good thing to have. blending everything together creates a better sense of style, more fluidity, and more awareness. i refuse to surf with a leash on a longboard, partially because i wouldnt take it out if i knew it was going to be head high or above, and secondly, i feel that if i lose the board, i DESERVE to have to swim in for it. keeps me in shape as well the longboard i have as of now is a 10’0, and it is huge. selling it to a friend who outweighs me by about 60 lbs, so it should suit him better. hopefully picking up a used 9’2 murphy, which should suit me a little better. okay. now its your turn! i appreciate all perspectives, however let’s try to keep the differences in opinion (i.e. the tudor/ cooperfish board threads) to a minimum. take it easy amigos. -danny

Im an advocate of no leashes on longboards . However I do use one in crowded conditions. It is not nice to see a loose longboard rolling through a crowd of surfers. I saw Beau Young at snapper rocks once getting abused by one of the local boys for this reason. Soul is fine but leggies have thier place in certain situations.

I counted my boards today. I was SHOCKED. I have TWENTY! Everything from a 6’ pig fish to a 9’4" noserider. I guess I just was going along making myself boards and lost track. I have them at work, in my house, some I’ve loaned to friends… I’m an addict… somebody stop me…

My current quiver consists of 6’4" and 6’6" modern fishes. Three 7’0"s, consisting of two bonzer thrusters and an egg that has a 2+1 fin set up. An 8’6" single fin (has FCS plugs to ride as a 2+1). Rounded out by three 9’0"s. All single fins, two roundpins that have more of a modern influence, and a retro like square tailed noserider. I usually take one of the shorter boards and one of the longboards with me and pick one of them accordingly. As of late I’ve been using the 7’0" egg a lot (resource ID 525), its my latest shape and I just recently added two forward FCS plugs because it was slipping out on bottom turns and cutbacks as a single fin. I now have a stock 9" injection molded fin and two Merrick composite fins as the side bites. I’m really having fun trying to figure out the best way to ride this board. So far I’ve been getting the maximum potential out of this board by closing up my stance and just flowing with the wave instead of trying to push it. It has that smooth, cutting thru butter with a hot knife feel to it…mmmmmmmmmmm

Hi my name is Keith and I’m a surf addict. 6’ trad fish 6’4" thruster (curved side fins) 6’10" thruster 7’ squashtail (narrow) 7’2" pintail 7’4" single fin w/wings old school 7’6" thruster minigun 7’8" balsa rounded pin thruster 7’10" thruster rounded pin 8’ swallowtail 8’ swallowtail (curved side fins) 8’ egg 8’ rounded pin thruster 8’2" hybrid 8’4" minigun 9’ trad longboard single fin 9’ hi perf longboard 2+1 9’1" pintail longboard gun single fin 9’6" gun thruster triple stringer 10’2" gun single fin 12’2" tandem that doesn’t count the 8’ and 9’2" boards I just finished shaping… I’ve been giving boards away to make room for new ones…can’t park a car in the garage anymore… but I’m still going shopping for blanks at lunchtime today. Gotta fill that hole in my quiver…

Man, I thought my guitar collection was obsessive…I’ve only got room for 4 boards on my garage ceiling…My beloved but broken 7’5" Liddle ‘tweener, 6’4" Edge, 7’4" Newbalonie/Mitzven thruster, and the 8.3E blank for my girls’ mini-mal. That leaves the walls for 5 boogers (the oldest is a first generation that flexes like a noodle and is my favorite) and my tried and true Neumatic which resides in the back of the Jeep.

Ya, I forgot to mention the half dozen bodyboards, 20 or so swim fins, the soft board my daughters ride, 6 board bags, the 3 broken longboards and that broken 8’6" that I’m going to get around to fixing one of these days… its all fun stuff… but I don’t have a mat. Not since I was a kid and used to get nipple rash every summer. Maybe someday.

My modest collection includes an assortment of longboards, mid-lengths, a couple of shorties that my son rides, one neumatic, one surfoplane, one Hawaiian Designs Paipo and a bunch of things either on the drawing board, on the disabled list or in the works. The things I’ve been riding most the past 12 months would be a 9’7" Wilderness edge board, 10’ Frye Eagle, large size Surfoplane and a Neumatic Mat which I’m finally starting to figure out. As far as changes… what I really need is to clear some of this clutter out of my life!

Interesting post: %= of total surfing time… 1- Neu. Mat (On order!)… 1- sponge 5%… 2-Kneeboards (Romo and homebuilt) (10%)… 1- 6’6" round-pin (5%)… 1- 7’ 2" Pin-Gun (5%)… 1- 7’ 2" Round Pin (60%)… 1- 7’ 10" Hybrid (my longboard) (10%)… 1- Surfkayak, Prejon (5%)…

Keith… you have a serious problem dude. I thought I was addicted. Don’t need no women, don’t need no wine. I feel a right with by (Brewer) needle and (Greenough) spoon.

Just picked up a 9’9" triple stringer blank in classic weight, and a 7’10" R in superblue… I’m jonesin’ man… gotta get that planer buzz… oh baby…

neumatic, tyler, wegener, surfoplane, parmenter, murphy, liddle, frye, brom, bark – all fun – all have the right days to ride them, however i always seem to ride the wrong board on the right day or right board on the wrong day

ha… aint it the truth

I find that when I have heaps of boards that I can’t enjoy going for a surf as much cause im always thinking which board I should take or should have taken.

(1)6’4"x18 3/4x 2 3/8 single to double squash, dont ride this one too much anymore since i surf Laniakea I moved up to riding mostly longer boards (2) 6’8"x18 3/4x 2 1/2 single barrel squash, my all arounder board when in doubt i use this (3) same as 2 but 19 wide and fuller rails (4) 7’0"x19 x 2 1/2 slight roll up front to slight single to vee in the tail baby squash will handle up to 8ft laniakea but great on the smaller days when its crowded, still turns almost as good as my shorter boards but the extra length gets me in quicker than most guys on that arent riding longboards. All boards have low entry and moderate to heavy tail rocker except 3 which has more entry
