ok guys ive been researching this on here for a while, just wanted to check my schedule and ask a few last questions.
im starting a hollow wood board which ill be posting the progress on here over the next month or so.
ive cut up my timber, sapele, 6mm x 45mm strips @ 8ft long
next im going to build a ply ‘aero’ frame (stringers and ribs) and chamber out as much as possible,
then once ive worked out the arrangement for the strips, superglue together (with zap a gap) and cut slightly oversize.
then flip over and add one layer of fibre and epoxy resin. do i then let this cure before flipping and clamping to the aero frame and what should i glue this to the frame with? im thinking if like poly it goes tacky would this be enough to bond to the frame?
then i flip and add the opposite skin,
and the final satisfying job is too add the rail material and shape to suit followed by a layer of 4oz all over with epoxy followed by a poly gloss coat for that super shine.
can anyone see any flaws in this or am i ready to get my hands ( and camera) messy?
cheers in anticipation
ps im hoping to get this ready to take to the uk fish fry!
how do i post bigger photos on here? do i drop the resolution as last time they came up tiny.
i use photobucket.com it’s pretty easy to work with. i think there’s a how-to-post-photos-using-photobucket thread on here somewhere from a few months back.

Looking forward to following your progress.
Unlike poly epoxy cures with a hard surface, I did some glue up test with industrial strenght contact adhesives but the best stuff was the exterior grade evostic PVA (in the blue bottle)
Adding the rail material is by far the most labour intensive time consuming part of the whole job, pbobaly takes as long as all the rest put together and then some.
What material are you planning to use for the rails?
i was speaking to a mate last night and he has some nice sycamore in his workshop so thinking that for the rails with maybe some of it for some stripes on the deck too. he has some purpleheart in his rack too but he aint keen on giving me any of that, he’s saving it for his stripbuilt canoe!!
if this carries on i wont have paid a penny for my timber!
also ive built a steam box at work for the students, do you think this would help for the rails?
Glue?? You cannot beat epoxy thickened with colloidal silica. Done right it wont sag, you can form beautiful fillets, it has REAL gap filling ability and we glue boats together with it!
cheers guys ill get onto it. just been chatting to our ceramic techs this morn and they were warning me bout silica being class one carcinogen!! but guess if it seals my board… lol
according to them the word colloidal is to do with it being in suspension and the fact that the solids dont drop. we had a debate this morning then referred to wikipedia which states silica as carcinogen and so if it sets and then u sand it its releasing as a dust. try colloid in wikipedia, we might be being over cautious as its university i work for but not convinced.
cheers hicksy, i was thinking that too, dont want to over complicate things. what do you use to bond the panel to the skeleton? do you use exterior grade contact adhesive too? or any other thoughts… i feel like a sponge at the moment, all this information!
also im wondering if you guys have any thoughts on fins/placement on this one? the board im replicating is a thruster but wondering about maybe having five placements… single, thruster, quad etc what do u think?
