So I am brand new to this and wondering about the idea of altering a
board a buddy shaped fo rme. It’s the red/orage single fin on the left
in the pics. I want to make it a short CI Gravy or Neck Beard type
board. It is now 6’2", 19 inces at widest point and 2 5/8 thick. I
either want to make it a thumb tail Gravy type board or hack the tail
square and make a Neck Beard clone. Either way I will shorten the nose
to make it wider than it is. I will also alter the fin configration as
well. 1st is this idea insane? If not then any advice or direction to
threads? I tried the search but was overwhelmed by the results. I am
looking ot make around a 5’3" to 5’7" or so in finished length. I will
post more pics.
I’d leave it how it is and keep it or sell it, and buy a blank and start from scratch…why wreck a board and its easier to get what ya want from a blank…if it had been snapped and you were trying to salvage some sort of board from the remains, that’d make sense…
I kinda agree with Pridmore, seeing as you don't have much board there to work with. If it was a longboard or SUP, and you were gonna reshape it to something smaller, I think you'd have a better go.
But a lot depends on your circumstances and determination, I guess. Either way, working with boards is fun and addicting, but it can sometimes become a frustrating mess, which is what no one wants for you.
The board looks pretty nice as is. The kind of modification that makes sense for a board like that would be to add sidebites or thruster fins, stuff like that.
id trade a blank for that single fin
Yeah Huckleberry I thought of adding side bites or making it a thruster or quad. I think you guys are right, better to sell, trade or change fin set up, vs. cutting it down. I have been surfing for 20+ years and my buddy in Wilmington NC, who shaped both of these boards, has been getting me itching to try shaping. I guess I should just get a blank and start from scratch. Procuring supplies in Raleigh NC is not easy with all the shipping costs. I may see what I can find in the way of foam and just begin a build thread on that. If anyone has any advice on supplies in NC or lowering costs please PM me. After 5 months of reading Swaylocks I feel I can not hold off on mowing foam any longer! This is a great site here and I look forward to learining from all of you.
good choice.
