Howzit Kokua and all! Mahalo for your suggestions!
Almost pau with glassing and about to sand, then apply sanding resin on repairs on bottom, nose, and tail. I’ll probably take it out to see how it feels…
For painting the board with epoxy appliance paint, any suggestions on how to sand the entire board before the paint job? i heard that people are using 1000grit sandpaper for it.and do wet-sanding as well.
After painting, any sanding necessary before clear coating it with some UV clearcoat? (i saw a Krylon UV Resistant Coating: Matte finish at the store this week.)
Howzit aloha, 1000 grit sounds like overkill to me, I would take it to 320 or 400 like a sanded finish then paint it since the paint will cover the sanding marks and if you can use a clear spray like Krylon over the epoxy paint that will be a great finish. Aloha,Kokua
Howzit rooster, If the store carries it, it will be right there with the other spray paint. Just ask for epoxy appliance spray paint have only seen it in white but there may be other colors. Aloha,Kokua
I've used it as well. Bought it at HD on Maui. I was doing a crazy amount of Sailboard repairs for a shop on Maui. The graphics etc had to be painted back to the original or as close as possible. Reds, oranges, yellows, blues. Bought most of them at Home depot and then clearcoated over them if necessary. Mostly cheap rattle cans. There is actually quite a bit of differance in whites, which meant using differant brands and sheens. Occasionalyl I just couldn't come up with the color in a spray can and would have to take the board in to Wailuku to have the local auto body paint distributor do a computer match.. I got to the point where I could tell the the differance between a "Starboard red" and a "Naish red" . Not far off of the "Eva" skill set.
Howzit Sammy and McDing, Kauai has a very limited suppy of some products and when it comes to epoxy paint I never saw any colors other than appliance white and I tried to find some other colors but no dice. Aloha,Kokua
it’s been over two months now working on my project. I got the board water ready and been out a few times. have not got to repaint the board though unfortunately.(with my work schedule and occasional small repairs that i have had to do)… so, if you see a board with patches on bottom and rails at breaks on the south shore, yep, thats me trying out the board…
what i’ve realized is that some section of the rails are somewhat weak… crack easily…(minor cracks though). so, i have ended up patching small cracks here and there… another reason for the delay… i just saw three small line-cracks yesterday…
friends have suggested to ditch the project…but sentimental value (for my fiance) and my desire to see the board in the water again :), i really want to fix the board right. the deck is actually in excellent condition… nicely glassed. the bottom is also good now, after my repairs about a month ago.
My question is that if it makes sense to just glass along the rails? to just cut piece of fiberglass enough for the rails and not to lay a whole piece of fiberglass to cover deck and bottom. will this affect the strength of the deck or bottom? i guess to shorten the story, i just want to make sure the rails are strong… especially, longer board = harder to transport…
Mahalo again for all your comments folks! made my project so much easier and fun!
Finally finished with the repairs and repainting. I used Krylon Plastic paint and Krylon brand clear coating, And also, a good quality painter’s masking tape was key for me.
I attached some pictures, before and after… let me know what you think… first big project for me…
I do have one question though. Now the board is finished, the texture seems dull (sanded)…it’s not as glassy or shiny as before…any suggestion on what type of clear coating that I could use? I was thinking finishing or sanding resin to give it that layer glassy look…but i heard resin will ruin the paint…
Any brand of clear coat that i could get from the store? Krylon, rust-oleum, or other normal kine brand? that aren’t too costly… I saw a UV Clear coat Krylon brand… any good to create that glassy look?
