ive been reading sways for a while but am just joining.
Im almost done building my second board, a 5’ 9" x 22 9/16 x roughly 3". flat deck boxy rails that fade to a semi sharp edge in the last 12". single fin
Ive had some hickups with glassing, and now about to put my fin box in and having some thoughts about putting too much volume in due to not foiling out enough Im an intermediate surfer who has been out of the water for a while due to injuries. 6’ 1" 180lbs.
Is there any thing I can do to cut out some of the volume ? should i just surf it as is and make my next one better ? was thinking about routing out a concave on the deck and glassing over that. im at work now so hopefully pictures will be up tonight.
I wouldnt even think about cutting volume out after glassing, just finish this board as best as you can and go surf it. First board is really just a learning process, surf it and learn from it.
I bet you’ll love it as it is. There’s nothing wrong with a lot of volume!
Well, a 5’9" board that is nearly 23" wide can absolutely have too much volume. Additional volume in a board with longer rail length has less overall effect. But I think you’re right, the borad will be fine for someone coming off injury, but I would have gone longer, slightly narrower, light on the rocker with the same or slightly larger volume in this situation. YMMV.
My brother is riding a 5-10 x 24" and at least 3" thick. He’s had a knee replacement then a rotator cuff injury. He probably weights in at over 200 and is about 5’8" or so.
I agree about going longer and narrower, but that’s my opinion.
I’ve taken boards I’ve made that were way too thick and from the mid rail reshaped the decks. I’ve done the same with boards that had enough width and reshaped them from the rails, leaving the bottom as is. Gets tricky doing the bottom edge of the rails right, but it’s way better than leaving the rails and trying to thin off the deck. Turned a couple of crappy boards into keepers. Turned the blue and white board into the blue and yellow board and it’s a much better board now.
