Boards & Bikes

Sorry folks - not a design question per se… Does anyone travel to the beach on a bike? If I could, I would prefer to cycle. Anybody know of a manufactured (or home made) system that can get a 9+ board to the beach on a bicycle? Thanks to anyone who might want to help with a suggestion.

know board racks for bikes exist, a guy around the corner from me has one. You could modify one of those Burly trailers ($$$). A good friend of mine owns a bike shop, I’ll ask her about them. Scott

Dammit, I used to have a link to a homemade bike rack, but it’s gone. Anyways, I’ll try to explain it. It was built with PVC pipes, 90 degree joints and T-joints. The T joints was cut open at the side so they would go around the bike frame pipe, padded with rubber innertubings and clamped to the bikeframe with “tube-clamps”(“slangeklemme” in Norwegian). Two off these was made. Lame Ascii art: Board goes here | v –. | | | | | .-. - tee joint . 90 degree joint | PCV pipe Your foot goes between the bikeframe and the board. The board was held in place by rubberbands as far as I can remember. I guess you could make it of any kind of pipe or metal. Hope this helps. regards, Håvard

Swaylocks, my ascii art got screwed up! Nevermind, found the link http://www.rodndtube.com/surf/info/surf_racks/BicycleSurfboardRack.html Good ol Rodndtube. regards, Håvard

I use a system called “Rocky Racks”, pretty good stuff and fairly common to see longboards & shortboards on them around here. Bought mine at a local surf shop in OB (San Diego), seems to me it was about $50(?). Took about an hour to get it on the bike and all set up right, and its worked well ever since. The board goes in a couple of padded, u-shaped metal bars that are bolted to the top tube of your bike, and held in by bungee cords. The whole thing sticks out about 18 inches from the side of your bike, so you have to watch where you are going on narrow roads. In my opinion a nine foot board is about as big as you really want to put on a bike, at least side mounted. Anything bigger than that, it gets a little unwieldy, especially on a windy day. If you’re interested I can post a picture, but I don’t have one handy. If you can’t find these locally, I just looked on Google and it appears that Becker Surfboards sells them and will ship them pretty much anywhere…

WetSand.com carries a decent selection of Bike Racks…including the Rocky Rack Model. http://www.wetsand.com/store/category.asp?CatID=160

I just carry the board under my arm. It’s the easiest way if traveling less than 2 miles and no steep hills to climb. Lower your seat a bit so you sit a little more upright and can put a toe down at stops without dismounting. Dan

i use a triler type device.i think it’s called a kangaroo.hauls short and longboards, is easy to use and is durable.cost about 120 bucks.i’ll double check name and manufacturer.
