I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what type of designs work best in mushy, weak waves. Obviously a longboard is an option but I’m talking shorter boards for waves in the waist to head high range. The reason I ask is because I learned to surf on the great lakes (don’t laugh) a few years ago and still surf there a couple months out of the year when not in Santa Cruz. The typical lake wave is slight onshore, mushy, and weaker than ocean waves even though it is fairly consistent in the above mentioned size range. I’ve been thinking of wider outlines, vee, a little thicker, and wider tails. I have only recently started shaping boards and experimenting with design, and was hoping some of the more experinced guys could give their thoughts. Thanks, ryan

I personally ride a modern tri fin fish with the following dimensions: Length 6’6", nose- 15 1/2"; width- 20 1/2" (at center); tail- 14 3/4" (swallow 8" wide); thickness- 2 3/8". It has a basic flat to vee in the tail bottom. I was skeptical if this board would work while shaping (have shaped about 35 boards) it but was really stoked on how it turned out. It will ride anything from a foot to 4 ft. Hawaiian waves. My other board is a nine foot long board which I thoroughly enjoy riding too.
